Microsoft is destroying Minecraft Java...
While we all appreciate the major content updates Minecraft has been getting, I'm starting to think that Microsoft is damaging Minecraft's simplicity, it's adding chaos and ugliness (Look at the new launcher interface...I have to look at Minecraft dungeons DLC ads just to start the game now...) And now they're forcing us to switch to Microsoft accounts and Perma banning accounts from online at their discretion (RIP 2b2t). It makes me sad to see something that I love getting infested with corporate greed and ugliness. These "player safety" features sound great, but I think it's just Microsoft preparing to over monetize Minecraft Java just like with everything else they make. Just look at the latest launcher update. It's calling all of the classic versions of Minecraft "unsafe" and adding notices and exclamation marks everywhere. IDK if it's just me...but I hope Microsoft doesn't start loading Java up with In-game purchases and "DLC". I hope they keep the goodness and charm that Java has, and don't ruin the beautiful creation Notch and his small team built together 10 years ago. The freedom of Minecraft's shouldn't be regulated by a corporation.
One solution (I doubt Microsoft would agree...but it is still a possibility) is to release the Minecraft Java Source code publicly and call it Minecraft Community Edition. The open-source accessibility would then allow the community to develop Minecraft, saving Microsoft money (While they can still contribute obviously, and maintain the Repos [They own Github] we wouldn't want to leave Jeb without a Job xD). All Microsoft would have to run would be Realms and the account management system. Allowing them more resources to focus on Minecraft Corporate Greed Edition (Bedrock). We could start a petition for this on change.org and email Bill Gates a bunch xD (Hey, we gotta start somewhere).
What do you think?

I agree the exclamation marks are unnecessary and the constant warnings about online play not being 'safe' get on my nerves. But remember, their target audience is primary school kids. Most of us on regularly active on this site are 12 at minimum. I myself am twice that age. That's a completely different group.
As for the account merger thing, I think that can best be blamed on the so-called 'account trade'. This basically involved trading accounts with unique names and/or capes, or selling them for money, similar to CS:GO skins.
And that involves scams. There's been plenty of instances where people with cool names found their accounts compromised. Because of the back and forth and the overall large amount of accounts being compromised compared to most games, Microsoft decided to move to a system where they can get 2FA implemented. Of course, the accounts coming under their direct control probably also helps.

Idk. Here's my take on this. A bridge between Bedrock and Java would be a good thing, I'd love to play with my BF on the Switch. But then you got equity issues, and the marketplace and "Minecoins" are... sleazy. At it's core, MC's meant to be a simple game that can be enjoyed in just about an infinite amount of ways, and if you restrict the ways to play or offer "better" and curated ways to play, you're really just sapping the life out of the game.
On one hand I think though that Bedrock hasn't totally done that for most of the paid content. Almost everything you can download is user-created or purely cosmetic. On the other hand, the emotes are the dumbest thing to ever be even concieved in gaming history. It is my firm belief that the person who decided to add emotes to Minecraft should get thrown into a bath of tar (or something equally sticky).
One thing to consider is Mojang has a revenue cap if they don't monetize something out of the playbase that already bought the game. It's also more and more becoming a big company instead of a small indie team, so it's natural for it to be more and more "commercial". I don't think we have cause for worry... yet. So long as previous versions of the game are accessible, Minecraft will always have a way to be played. We'll have to see, but so far Microsoft has been mostly hands-off with Mojang, we've been getting huge content additions for free, etc, to keep the game as relevant as possible.

just put it back how it used to be done problem solved
Oh boy oh boy, another huge thread with huge replies. Here's my take and I don't know if I'm repeating somebody:
- The dungeons thing is not really an ad as far as I experienced. It's more like a "What's new thing" that they only show once.
- You need to understand that because of players like YOU and all the Karen's out there, their hand is forced to do this. See it like this: They need to put a disclaimer in front of any possibility of getting to multiplayer to prevent getting blamed by people. They added the warning when you click Multiplayer for the first time, they need to add warnings to versions prior to that warning being added.
- They also get hate for updates that ruin worlds and get spammed by bug duplicates that aren't even in the game anymore. No wonder that they warn players not to play on versions that still have problems newer versions don't have.
- Open source isn't going to happen.
Merging both of the versions could be great
You could even change in the settings: MOBILE or Pocket version/style

Why does everyone think Microsoft has so much control over Java Edition? They don't. That was literally a part of the contract Notch made and signed. Microsoft owns the rights and gets money from Minecraft, but they don't have any direct control over Mojang or what Mojang does.
On top of that, Mojang has outright said they have zero intention to make Bedrock and Java be even remotely the same, especially in the redstone department.
If you are going to get mad at anyone, get mad at Mojang. They are the ones who have chosen to do all of this.
Also, no, Mojang accounts weren't the safest things in the world. Not even close. Mojang is just really good at sweeping security breaches under the rug, it seems.
EDIT: One more thing. The new banning system they added only applies to Bedrock edition, iirc. 2b2t will not be affected.

1. Then why is the accounting system switching from a perfectly fine Mojang setup (yes it has had issues in the past, but not really anymore) to a Microsoft controlled and regulated disaster. (Microsoft isn't exactly the most secure company either, they had a massive data breach January of this year) If Mojang still has power over Minecraft, then why has Bedrock been monetized the way it is...Mojang back in the day would never have done microtransactions.
2. Microsoft (I consider Mojang to be an extension of Microsoft TBH) has suggested that the new banning system will be implemented on Java, and ultimately (why else would they migrate the accounts to the same platform in the first place, a corporation doesn't give a crap about anything but profits and power).
3. If Notch's contract really has so much power, then why isn't he involved with Mojang anymore? He literally lives in a Beverly Hills mansion gaming and posting on Twitter most of the day. (He's ranted several times on Twitter about Microsoft's dealings with Minecraft, and he doesn't like them to say the least...) His weak contract, unfortunately, means nothing to a corporation notorious for exploiting the legal system (It's so big for a reason...).
In conclusion, Mojang doesn't really exist anymore...it's just Microsoft...Sad...I know. I hope things get better, and I have hope for the future. I believe that as long as our community sticks together, a corporation won't be the end of us or the amazing memories we've made creating this game.

I'll try to answer what I can.
1. The idea of account authentication isn't a super new idea, and from Mojang's point of view probably a very good one. Instead of using an external program or phone number (which I highly doubt people would be ok with) like some things do, simply needing a Microsoft account I'd say is somewhat tame. This also isn't the first time Mojang has done an account move like this.
2. I'd like to see where you saw Microsoft suggesting this system be added to Java.
3. Bit of an iffy topic. Despite the money Notch made, he fell into a very deep depression which has led to the way he is now. Notch literally could not handle the popularity he gained from Minecraft. He doesn't really seem interested in doing much nowadays besides coding small games like he used to before he made MC. As for why he bought the house, as I said, he's not super interested in doing very much. He can at least make his whole living alone situation at least somewhat nicer. Granted, I don't know how he is now, but considering all the bad things I've heard about him and how he acts I don't think he ever got over it. I don't think Notch was always like he is now. I hope I explained that decently enough.
I guess another thing to consider is that a huge majority of the stuff on the Bedrock marketplace isn't made by Mojang or Microsoft. It's all made by members of the community who, I suppose, got the attention of some "content moderators" of some kind. I'm pretty sure those creators get paid for the stuff they make that gets added to the marketplace. I'm not defending it, mind you, it could 100% use better content moderators at the very least.

My problem is that Minecraft used to be for free art, now Microsoft is requiring payment for it, especially by taking cuts from the community. It's illegal to sell Minecraft maps *except* on Microsoft's official store (loopholes like schematics do exist...but that's not the point). They are controlling the community too much IMO, and that's really my issue with this whole thing.
Ok, so, I originally had a super long thing typed out here, but it got into economics n' crap and I felt like it went on for waaay too long. Bedrock and Java are two completely different beasts handled by different teams. Jeb really just kinda checks on the Bedrock team from time to time, but he still stays with the Java team most of the time.
IIRC, Bedrock's Team is located in America while Java's team is still in Sweden like they've always been. It shouldn't surprise how different these versions are from each other.
Also, about the taking cuts from the community is normal business. Take Team Fortress 2 for example. The game has community made cosmetics that get added all the time, but the creator of said cosmetic doesn't get all the money from said sale. Valve takes a cut of the money since they're selling it via Valve's store. Valve isn't going to just let somebody sell something at THEIR store without profit for themselves. It's still Valve's store, and they still need to make money off of the sales especially if they are going to put it on their own...uh..."digital shelves"? Yeah.
People seem to think Mojang is just a single entity but it really isn't. It's like...4 different entities. Java Team, Bedrock Team, Dungeons Team, and Earth Team. All of these games are handled by entirely different people, despite having the Mojang name still show up. The classic Mojang team is still around, and they're the ones working on Java edition and keeping it the way it is.
Minecraft is absolutely still free art, it's just that Bedrock edition is such a weird anomaly of a game in every aspect down to its very origin, that we've ended up in the situation. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
And it's not like you can just remove the microtransactions from Bedrock edition. People paid actual money for these things, so suddenly making them free would be a disaster as you'd have tons of super pissed off people complaining that they essentially wasted their money.
ok i'm gonna stop talking and responding to these posts now because holy crap this STILL ended up super long. i need to shut up. lol

Well, this is all some interesting points I've read, including in the comments.
First of all the monetisation: while I won't call it impossible, I think it's highly unlikely Microsoft will force such drastic changes onto mojang and the java community. They should know how much backlash that would most likely create, and thus I hope they're smart enough to not do that, but it's not impossible.
On the poll now: I doubt it's a good idea to make Minecraft open-source, because of all the kids involved and the ensuing chaos that would create. This doesn't mean I'm against community input, but mojang has been listening to the community more comfortable recently, so that isn't a massive deal.
One thing I read in the comments here, is the idea that Microsoft I trying to stop support for java edition. I also doubt this because of how many people actually play java edition. This is another case where the backlash from the community would be huge. And Microsoft should know this as well. While bedrock is effectively their version, java is still the biggest version of the game which I doubt they will be able to remove, nor really merge with bedrock. That last one is more likely though.
Also the account moderation. As said in the Minecraft.net post, this will only extent to featured servers and realms. What I get from this, together with what the ban message looks like, this will most likely extend to the bedrock servers that you can join without inputting an IP (the featured servers) and realms with hopefully an option to disable universal bans.
I can however not say this without stating that Microsoft is in full legal ownership of mojang and thus can do whatever they want, so while I don't think any of these fears will actually happen because of community backlash (a bit like this thread but way bigger), nobody has legal rights to stop Microsoft. I just hope they're smart enough to not ruin the biggest game of all time.

good reasoning, same as I was thinking about
why don't they just turn Minecraft Java Edition and Minecraft Bedrock Edition into one thing? and you can switch between classic Minecraft, AKA Java Edition and Bedrock Edition when you make a world.
Bedrock and Java are coded differently, while it possible it would be a lot of work and we would not see updates in a while
I voted for other. I understand that Microsoft want to protect their product and make money but the whole appeal of Minecraft was how easy it was for people to get access and even mod the game.
I think they should definitely improve multiplayer features, because Minecraft isn't really coded to be a multiplayer game. Whether they merge or not I can't really say how I'd feel but I think there is still a lot of potential.

Lets be honest, this is the second step to literally no longer having Java support. It started with the name change, and now they're forcing us to get Microsoft accounts. You need a Microsoft account in order for you to really do anything aside from offline stuff in Minecraft Bedrock, so I think there is something suspicious that Microsoft is totally trying to do.
"Player Safety Features" is just a bunch of bull, Mojang accounts were already safe, and do you really think people are more likely to hack a Mojang account than a Microsoft account? No. So I definitely this is just a set up to eventually drop Java Edition, and make Minecraft Bedrock the only way to get new features and updates.
This is obviously just a conspiracy theory of mine though.

I was making a joke xD, but ty for the info :)
I'm kind of in the middle with this one. I personally wouldn't mind seeing Java and Bedrock become one single version, but as for monetizing, Microsoft better just stick to Accounts and Realms.
I'm kinda scared for Minecraft java now. It's my favorite game ver that I grew up with... If I have to pay for skin, textures, and other stuff then I think I'm done with Minecraft. It was fine (or was till 1.16.4). and yea now that you say it the launcher is a complete mess now. I hope that nothing changes with the way Minecraft java is now. And I'm not sure about putting its source code out there I just want java to keep the way it is. And why are we forced to switch to Microsoft accounts? I use my dad's Minecraft account (since I lost mine) so how am I going to be able to play Minecraft anymore?? Minecraft was perfectly fine the way it was. I'm overwhelmed by what's happening and I just wanna know what's going on with all this Microsoft stuff!!
Everything will be the same
After my account gets shut down what am I supposed to do now?
everything stays the same, plus minecraft says they're gonna migrate your account, so no worries
Edit: paying for your own vanilla player skins is not gonna be possible, the marketplace is just optional, we don't have to do that

I wish they would stop updating the launcher, even the old launcher from like 1.8 worked fine, the one which came after that was alright but It's the GAME which wants updates not the launcher.
And rather than just being unnecessary the latest update to the launcher is worse than the old one.

Microsoft has done a great job, I think, but they still need to stop with this, but for the most part on me is that, leave bedrock edition alone but still keep doing things on java. as to me, they have done a good job
Edit: java and bedrock cant possibly merge, bedrock is in for Nintendo switch, and others, while a it is little in for windows, while java is only for pc, so it would be hard to do that, plus adding micro transaction features for a sandbox game is kinda dumb, and we know that Microsoft is not dumb, right?

But still, keep your opinions, I don't want to change your minds
That's annoying. Found that they have deleted all my launcher profiles.
As for your worry, I find that extremely unlikely. They already have bedrock edition (or whatever it's called) to monetise like that.
And for community development... No. That sounds just like a recipe for disaster. Who will decide what direction to go? People will constantly disagree and I think there will be no new additions to the game and thus it will stagnate. Sure it would be good for bug fixes and such, but for Minecraft's future, it would only be damaging.

Yah, That's why I suggested that Microsoft still has authority over the sourcecode on GitHub, but that is a good point :)
Bill Gates isn't responsible for minecraft but do what you gotta do lol
Microsoft needs to know we're NOT GONNA STAND WITH THIS!! Forcing us to switch to Microsoft, this is stupid, just plain stupid, Microsoft needs to be sued, Mojang was way more secure than Microsoft, "Player Safety Rules" BULL TURD!! They just want control over our whole lives. But I think there is hope if we show then resistance so they know we're on to them maybe they'll know that if they continue on this people will stop using their stuff because everyone will know of their cruel intent and never use their stuff again, if so maybe they'll back down, and we can keep the system we all know and love, the true safety was with Mojang. Mojang should end their contract with them, and be a separate company again.
i played pocket edition and got an account to play minecraft earth and the account was gone in TWO DAYS
- We wont have auth servers down every month
- Microsoft already owns Mojang so there's basically no difference
- Mojang doesn't have a contract with Microsoft, they are literally OWNED my microsoft
- You can't end a contract
- You have a choice to not use a microsoft account, and not go on servers
Exactly, I can't go on servers no matter what now! Microsoft requires a phone number, and I can't provide that because I have no phone. Mojang doesn't require a phone! I CAN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT RIGHT NOW CAN I!?!?
I have a Microsoft account and I didn't need to use a phone number...? I don't remember having to, anyway.
if you dont have a phone, chances are you have parents who do.
They should keep updating it and stuff, they shouldnt release the source code, but merging java accounts with mircosoft accounts? No that's insane, they're insane
They just need to stop changing everything and do normal updates that aren't messing up accounts and causing confusion
They just need to stop changing everything and do normal updates that aren't messing up accounts and causing confusion
Honestly, if Microsoft does turn java into bedrock, I'm moving to hytale
I don't think it should be released open source, because that will create compatibility issues. Other than that, I'd say red.
Bedrock on consoles are still a mess to this day and downgraded every platform into a mobile version of the Minecraft. These guys are screwing up Minecraft big time. I do not get how you can possibly mess up Minecraft. These guys surprised me in more ways than one. From the super duper graphics pack, buggy and broken console bedrock versions of the game, to dry updates, I am not even surprised anymore.
They literally own java and haven't ruined it.
I don’t think we have any reason to believe that microsoft will step outside their quota of realms and featured servers and try moderating dedicated servers like 2b2t, but I won’t deny that it’s possible, and if we know anything about big tech its that we definitely can’t trust it to regulate itself. The scary thing is that microsoft is legally allowed to both moderate MC however it wants, and impose its TOS on all of us if it wants to. I’m not optimistic about this.
I mean we could probably sue them for that as players who purchased the game even before Microsoft owned it would be forced into TOS they never agreed to, meaning that if someone bought the game before Microsoft bought it but then now they add a rule in the TOS that "YOU CAN'T SWEAR ON ANY MINECRAFT SERVER, NOT 2B2T NOT YOUR OWN NOTHING!" or even worse a rule about collecting your data that means that OG players would have leverage as they owned the game BEFORE these TOS and shouldn't be forced to change for them.
Microsoft needs to back off from Java because the community backlash ain't gonna be good if it keeps going downhill like this. Bedrock is pretty much ruined at this point with all the micro-transactions and stuff. I wouldn't be surprised if they start putting a few ads in Bedrock too.
It's a nightmare to think, even for bedrock, to see ads and microtransactions in Minecraft someday, every server is moderated by Microsoft... If Minecraft goes in that direction things won't be pretty.

I hear you comrade, microsoft on bottom.
Not even gonna touch this one. Nope. Not gonna. Feel free to do that if you want. Mhm.
