Good morning chat, it's already Star Wars day tomorrow..
With all these awesome jams happening at the moment, I'm going to try getting back into skinning - expect a return of the regular schedule!

ANNOUNCEMENT:

I'll be switching to Kofi soon due to Planet Minecraft's issues with protecting skinners and skin theft. I want to have the liberty of posting things I make without the worry that some guy can download it and knowing I'll have to deal with a doppleganger on the servers I go one. I want to post commissions without the worry they'll get stolen. I want to post auctions to anyone interested or just skins in general that people can use without others also incidentally taking it.

A Small Ramble For Any New Skinner

I sometimes get pms asking for my opinion, critique, or help with what to do for colors, skinning, and shapes; and it gets me thinking of every learning moment I had while skinning.

So for some context, I originally came from School Roleplay in 2016, stuck around there until 2021 and then left when things felt mundane. Things felt lackluster, sure there were little mini-games and all sorts of ways to roleplay but at the end of the day, I had done everything, and there was nothing new to try other than to perhaps try out for staff; but what good would that do? Additionally, I was growing up. Things that I once found appealing as a younger kid didn't entertain me in the same way. I couldn't feel the same things that the newer generation of players found jaw-dropping or exciting. But one thing that remained the same was my awe in the creativity of skinners there.

When you look on the internet, you can see all sorts of skins from skindex and planet minecraft, but around 2018, nothing really stood out, they all looked the same, except for players from SRP. They had the most creative ways to incorporate minimal real-life details into what is a very small and compact skin texture. They had the most brilliant ways to make vibrant skins that could stand out from one another in the most simple ways! So, in 2018, while I learned how to improve my skinning, I started to make this collage of skins of players I was in awe of.



I'd keep a folder of screenshots, looked at how they played with colors, hair textures, clothes, accesories, etc... And through that, with art references I'd make, I'd learn to incorporate that into my own style while adapting to things I knew I'd like.



Now i've moved on from SRP, sometimes I pop on to see how much the place had changed from when I once played. Right now, I play LOTC and Wicked Roots. I like magic, I like fantasy, I like the unordinary to destress from IRL situations like schoolwork and all that stuff. I can't deny that LOTC skins are beautifully made, after all, skinners I've seen there have worked hours upon hours to make the most intricate things, but I know for myself that isn't really my style, and it doesn't allow me to fit in smaller details that i'd want. But that was something that took time and referencing for me to find out. Today, I share a bit of both worlds. I don't like it too simple, but i also don't want it overcomplicated; but i still like to keep a certain vibrancy that fits with what i like and who i am.

So for any skinners out there, my biggest advice is to keep a look out of your favorite skinners or skins, and see how they work. Is it something you feel like you want to do? Is your work something you feel extra proud of? Notice how things blend on the color wheel and how they play with the color theory (i hate the color theory but quick tip- saturated yellow helps stand out as white). Once you figure that out, you got yourself a way to improve and progress.

Note: do not steal snippets from other skins. If you like something from another skin ask.
Note #2: The simpler your skin is (ex: a black t-shirt and pants, oversized sweaters, etc...) the likelier it is someone else has had the same thing (so stop bnefore you think someone stole from you). Lost a friendship because a girl had a massive freaking out over another girl making a character with black hair and black horns.

If you thought of it, so did several others. So if you want something to big big and stand out, add things. A sweater with a pattern on the cuffs, an accessory, etc...


I think that's all I can think of in terms of advice.
