Loving it...

To me, and I probably speak for both of us over here, Minecraft is the kind of game which somehow always manages to catch your interest again, one way or the other. Before this month I haven't been playing for quite a long time, in fact.. we were more focussed on Empyrion (= "another game") as of late but the main reason we got interested in that is also because it is a bit of a Minecraft-like game. Just set out in space.

So this month things changed. I set up a Minecraft LAN server for us to play with during the Holidays, powered by Forge. To be very honest I still don't care as much about vanilla Minecraft as I used to, but this month my gf and me got completely sucked into the game again thanks to our collection of favorite mods. As I was hoping for the mods, and all the extra ores and stuff, made our mining trips really appealing again. Well, the mods and the new caves & cliffs environment to be perfectly honest: I really came to enjoy the bigger expanded world a lot more than I would have given it credit for a few months ago.

We play on 1.18.2 btw, because some of the mods we love only support up to this version. Suits us fine anyway because it was caves & cliffs which somewhat made us stop playing in the first place ;)

But yah, I've always been quite a Minecraft fan. And I can prove it as well!

Yah, and for the record... there's a bit of history behind each of those accounts. Well, local history; related to the server which we heavily played on at that time ("Empire"). But still... when you're building and messing around then nothing beats having a 2nd window available to look at things from another perspective. One thing led to another and before you know some players actually thought "TheOtherShell" was actually someone else, despite me telling 'm otherwise (yet not stopping the roleplay) ;)

Good times :)

But yeah, that's my story. Figured I'd share because I >< missed the poll and I love Minecraft, always have!

Better for what? ;)

In my opinion 1.18.2 is the best version for modding play because many major mods support up to this version and nothing beyond yet. Yet at the same time I also enjoy 1.20.x which gives us cool stuff like camels, the Warden (and sculk!) and the archeology activity.

I dunno, I'm not really against them or anything (I designed several sugarcane & pumpkin/melon farms of my own) but at the same time I also think there's something to say about manual attending to your gardens and/or needs in the game.

Not to mention the always present issues of chunks unloading; as soon as you're gone then you can usually kiss your progression goodbye as well. And if you're using a badly designed setup then you may not even notice any glitches happening once you're back within the region. Something which wouldn't happen if you attended to your gardens yourself ;)

Late reaction, but oh well...

A customized spawn egg which doesn't "just" spawn some kind of animal, but a special customized animal. Something which your users could actually put to some good use or which at the very least would be cool to show off a bit. For example if you spawn a donkey or a llama then you can have them spawn with a chest, and you can have said chest spawn with some items inside.

And trust me: it sounds more complicated than it has to be. Just start with building a working /summon command which can actually, well, summon such a custom animal. Once you have that you can then dump its full NBT construct right into the EntityTag:{} section of the spawn egg. And if you want to spawn the custom animal with custom items... then start with the /give command which gets you the custom item ;)

The best part is that you can easily set this all up with just vanilla commands and optionally the use of notepad to copy/paste some commands out of the way, though I'd recommend Visual Studio Code to do some solid "Minecraft scripting".

Just the other day I finally managed to scratch another item of my MC todo list: LlamayamiKun; a customized llama. The spawn egg creates the llama but also sets it up with a (customized) carpet and a full sized chest (strength 5 llama) and the chest contains a customized AyanamiKun (player) head (who happens to be my friend; this llama is her favorite pet animal).

Maybe food for thought?

I think it's a good question and one which depends a bit of context. It sits very close to diamond armor but does provide some extra knockback protection which can be a good thing to have.

But as far as I know it doesn't provide any extra protection against lava (for example) despite the fact that the armor itself cannot be destroyed by it. Maybe not a fair setup but I figured I'd give myself some netherrite armor and jump into a small puddle of lava (so half a block or so). The armor remained unharmed, but I got down to 3.5 - 4 hearts.

Then I did the same with the diamond armor and lo and behold... I took the same amount of damage but of course my armor also too a little beating.

So from that perspective... I don't really see this as a big deal. The overal armorrating isn't that much higher, the main advantage being knockback.

Still... I do think that Mojang made this a nice balanced upgrade. I mean... while it is tricky to get 1 ingot it's also fair (IMO!) that one ingot is all you need to upgrade one piece of diamond armor.

Well, the results are clear!

Thanks to everyone who voted, I really appreciate you guys sharing your opinion on all this.

In the mean time I posted a blog about 3 ways to control your Minecraft world which briefly dives into Redstone, basic command structure and mentions datapacks, but I am planning on using this as a start for a series.

For now I have a good idea what to focus on.

Can't really answer this because I've only used a few; I basically pick one and then stick with it for several years to come. Still... for a pack to be considered advanced I think it has to provide support for a few things:

• Alternate blocks; proving a variety in textures for the same types of blocks.
• Side textures; most notable with grass blocks: making sure you're not looking at a dirt textured side but more green. Also applies to other blocks like snow.
• Optionally mob texture variants.
• Extra or maybe some alternate sounds.
• Support for several popular shaders to ensure solid looks.
• Support for several notable / popular mods and their items.
• Not fully relying on maxed out (graphics) settings but also making sure that "Fast settings" still gives you a good experience.
Just my 2 cents of course. So far I am very happy with the CreatorPack and I optionally alternate a bit with MultiPixel.

According to my friend Aya (who plays the most in survival between us) there's little more satisfying than making your own beehive and actually seeing bees starting to use it as their home. Partly for the honey and honeycombs, but for her it's also the idea of having some animal friends which you're actually helping out a little. She even build 2 more hives which aren't meant to be used for harvesting but only to house some bees.

Well, that got me thinking a bit...

Why can't we have more animal structures which players can build to keep their pets or random animals happy?

I'm not talking about things like stables for horses or pens for cows, sheep or pigs because those are just strucures that you build in which you placed the animals. They don't recognize the structure as their home or place to be.

But for example: building a cage or "house" for parrots to live in. Even when tamed they'd recognize this as their home and will prefer to stay there. Going in and out a bit, like bees do with a hive. With the main difference that if you draw a tame parrots attention they'll fly back to your shoulder again: ready to go with you on your next adventure!

Or maybe a doghouse? A (multiblock?) structure which tamed wolves will recognize as their own and if they run around your base they'll actually want to go there during the night or when its raining.

A basket made out of wool blocks for your cats / ocelots (wild ocelots in a village might be tempted to use one too); maybe even wolves / dogs could use this and get into a bit of a fit with the cats / ocelots.

Or a stable for your cows (or other farm animals) which, when connected with a pen, would make them use the grass to haze but when the rain starts they'll find their way back into their pen again, a bit like villagers do?

I am well aware of mod restrictions but indeed... when you use the main Forge page it's easy to miss out on the specifics. Weird.

That's my issue with this post: just "dumping" the whole thing in here without bothering with any effort to try and make this easier on the people wanting to help out. I probably should have just ignored it but oh well.

So, despite the fact that I'm plain out impressed with Iris / Sodium I'm not using it for everything. Iris relies on Fabric which is another modloader whereas I rely on Forge as soon as I want to enjoy "modded Minecraft". So while I am really enjoying Iris on my recent vanilla'ish profiles (1.20.2 & 1.20.4) I still rely on OptiFine for my modded endeavours (1.18.2).

With all those available choices I think it's a good time to be a Minecraft player!

Always works for us, and Mojang was also kind enough to fix the "skin problem" a long time ago. Of course this can become a bit of an issue if you end up far apart from each other, in that case your client can start massively lagging.

But just a good shared session won't be an issue.

You're not giving us much to go on, just stating that something "doesn't work" doesn't give anyone enough info to help debug an issue.

For example... when did this happen? After you added a specific mod (which mod?) or did you just throw the whole bunch together and try to start things up?

Another thing that stands out: 1.19.2, why not 1.19.4? But even if you were limited to 1.19.2 then the most recent version of Forge is 43.2.21, you're on 43.3.0, so where did you get that from?

So yah, give us more to work with here.

My favorite server is my own private LAN server ;)

ok, ok, more serious though: I prefer servers that don't sway away too much from Minecraft itself. So "plain" survival servers which may or may not add a little bit extra. For example, a server I used to play on was full vanilla in their mining worlds: no teleport, no special powers, no extra powered armor but they did give you a compas which would always point you to an "exit" or, if you wanted to, to the location where you got killed.

My reasoning is simple: mining & surviving never really gets old in Minecraft I think.

That won't work if the player isn't an op who doesn't have access to server commands.

Another thing is that there's no need for such complex constructions in the first place because teleporting players across dimensions has already been implemented into vanilla Minecraft quite some time ago.

If my friend Aya is in the nether and I want to get her out all I have to do is: /tp AyanamiKun @p, and I'm done. This also applies to datapacks.

I glossed over a detail... what if you don't have a specific destination, then coordinates obviously won't work. Yah, my bad!

But there's still a better solution: /execute in minecraft:overworld run tp AyanamiKun ~ ~ ~. However, this does not tp someone to any kind of spawn, but to their current location (~ ~ ~) yet in the other dimension. And of course, if you don't want to focus on one player but want to get all players out of the nether you'd use: /execute in minecraft:overworld run tp @a[nbt={Dimension:"minecraft:the_nether"}] ~ ~ ~

Try getting an archiver like WinZip or WinRAR and then check the jarfiles contents. So: open the jarfile using the archivers. See: a jarfile is basically nothing more but a so called zipfile which simply uses a different extension.

Once you start looking around you should be able to make out a folder structure. That's your ticket out of this mess: get the right folders and copy 'm into the datapacks directory of your Minecraft world.

For the record! re-reading: that (last) world isn't my doing, I have my moments but nothing like that. This is a downloaded world I got many years ago. Figured I'd share because credit where credit's due! I don't go for stealing and definitely want to prevent wrong impressions.

I have my way around redstone, oh I do, but I really lack the patience for something as seen above.

It depends.

When push comes to shove then I want to set up my own server, my own collection of mods on my own computers. Good luck with Bedrock! Java all the way.

But then again... when I am out on the road using my trusty Surface Pro X device... yah, that Java version won't work but but does work for me is my Bedrock / Windows edition. I had tons of fun with that!

None of them is "better", it's a dumb concept: it all depends on context.

Instead of wondering what is "better" you need to focus on: "what do I want out of all this?", then make your choice accordingly.
