I'm not one to talk, as I've never successfully made a skin before, but I think a good way to go about it is to just try and figure out how to have fun with it. For me, when it comes to working on literally anything, I just do whatever might sound fun to actually do with the project. This often means writing flat nonsense and drawing disproportionate and silly guys with big bald heads.
Find out how to have fun in it, and maybe you'll wind up making good stuff out of it. And if it ain't good, well at least you did something fun or silly instead of stressing over getting it right.

I like the first characterization of Thunder, Big sweet gives me some Bulk Head vibes from the transformers series. maybe instead of giving her angst maybe play into the idea she's a bit more of a klutz (not stupid, but makes a habit of being reclass in trying to constantly prove herself to her sister).

Storm, I like the idea she's a capable worrier who's strong and knowledgeable, but worry's she may not be good enough to protect others. brings in some interesting character drama. but I'd drop the memory altering bit, it just feels a bit unnecessary. though I'd play around with the idea of a trickster whos targeting storm.

as for Lila try to go for a hybrid between the two versions, make her the most confident in the group, the most educated and socially adept, but also the most incapable of the three.
