Update 12/23/2018: After 3 years of inactivity, this mod is been brought back! I've completely re-written the entire codebase for this mod to be easy to update, tweak, and add content (and hopefully with less bugs as well :P). There are a few features missing, but they will be added back soon. It should be noted that this mod is completely incompatible with older versions of it.
I hope you enjoy!

About

Elemental Items is a mod that adds a bunch of strong weapons, tools, and armor to Minecraft. Most of the items have an obvious link to a corresponding element (Fire, Ice, Water, Nature, Earth, and Air), while others are based off of a purely Minecraftian concept (such as Ender). One sword is based off of the 2013 artwork for Magic: The Gathering's Sword of Light and Shadow, and while it doesn't fit any sort of elemental theme, I really liked it when I first wrote this mod back in 2013.

Now That we've got that out of the way, let's take a look at what we got.

Fire

Probably the first concept I wanted to exist in Minecraft that drove me to create this mod in the first place. While not very enchantable (have you ever tried to tame fire?), wielding items imbued with fire allow you to light your enemies aflame as well as automatically smelt anything you mine. Not to mention that wearing a full set of fire armor allows you to see perfectly fine while submerged in lava, on top of always being immune to fire.

Ice

The second concept that I wanted to add. Ice is a very pristine, crystalline, and beautiful element. Items imbued with ice have a magical fidelity even higher than that of gold, and allow you to enchant them with powerful enchantments with more often and more reliable than with any other material in vanilla Minecraft and this mod. On top of being magically inclined, ice armor will automatically slow and weaken those who wish harm upon the wearer, and the same fate will happen to any unlucky enough to taste the blade of an ice sword. Though powerful in its abilities, ice is very brittle and will break much more easily than the other elements.

Water

Water is a force to be reckoned with. One wrong move in a body of water can whisk anything away from shore, and into the dark abyss. Items imbued with water are faster than any vanilla item. The tools break most blocks almost instantly, and the sword will push anyone away when they are struck by it. Water arrows are not bothered by water like their non-water counterparts, and sail effortlessly through it as if it weren't there. Those who choose to wear water armor are completely immune to explosions, and a full set will grant the wearer full mobility, sight, and air while underwater.

Nature

Nature has always been viewed in literature as something to learn from. Nature is strong and resilient. While a forest may succumb to the flames of an all-consuming fire, youthful trees grow back in their place and restore the bountiful green that once preceded them. Users of leaf-imbued tools will grow with their use; earning experience from the tools when they are used to mine the correct blocks. Those who wear leaf armor are immune to any form of withering effects, and those who wear a full set gain a permanent regeneration effect. Nature hates the undead, and any undead monster that attacks a wearer of leaf armor, or feels the bite of a leaf blade, will take extra damage and quickly be laid back to rest.

Earth

The earth is resilient. The earth is strong. The earth is shamed by what stone swords are. While having no obvious magical abilities like the other sets, items imbued with earth are solid and reliable. Earth tools and weapons have a durability that far outstrip any normal item in Minecraft. While the sword is heavy and slow, it has the power to smash any living thing back to the ground if it tries to stay in the air, and it will bury any mob unfortunate enough to be on the ground when it is struck. Earth armor is heavy, and wearing a full set makes the wearer immune to knockback by normal means.

Air

Air is everywhere. It is a part of this planet and we rely on it to survive. The human race has longed to fly with the birds for millennia. Wearing a full set of air armor will allow the wearer to break the hold of gravity upon them and fly as high as they wish. Using an air sword allows the wielder to force their enemies to experience the same experience -- but only momentarily before they are claimed again by the earth and plummet straight to the ground. Those who attack a wearer of air armor are pushed away by strong winds and must reach their target again to do any more damage.

Ender

This is the only element exclusive to Minecraft. The end is not just an element -- it is an entirely separate dimension with its own inhabitants. Arguably the most versatile, Tools imbued with the ender element will automatically teleport broken blocks to the user's inventory. Broken containers like chests will also have their contents teleported to the breaker's inventory as well. If the wielder's inventory is full, the remaining items are placed at their feet. The ender sword disorientingly-teleports any living thing hit to a random, nearby location. Any wearer of ender armor will grow in power the more pieces are worn, with lasting effects including night vision and luck being granted to those who use the armor to the fullest.

How'd you like those descriptions? I came up with them myself, pretty cool right? Here's a quick rundown of the base numbers for each elemental set:
ElementDurabilityMining SpeedAttack DamageEnchantability
Fire200085
5
Ice100085
50
Water2000505
10
Leaf200081515
Earth400085
10
Air2000105
10
Ender2000810
22
Plain200085
10
VsDiamond15618310

Numbers aren't everything though -- the special effects listed above the table make some elements with lower numbers (like fire) perfectly viable because of the extra benefits they give.

Known bugs

With every piece of software, there are bugs. As of this writing, there are a few that I know of that I will list down below. The ones that are italicized can technically be fixed, but I will choose not to because of what would need to be done to fix them. I will provide a description as to why the bug exists.
  • The ender dragon ignores the knockback immunity the earth set provides
    • Exists because of the way Minecraft Forge, the modding api I used to create this mod, works. The ender dragon doesn't technically apply a knockback effect. When the dragon runs into a living thing, it explicitly sets the velocity of that living thing instead of applying a knockback effect. There is no guaranteed way to prevent this from happening without potentially introducing weird bugs with knockback.

Crafting

Crafting is more roundabout than vanilla minecraft crafting. Because of this I may make the items and armor more powerful to balance it out. To craft an elemental item, you first need to craft a normal crystal version of the item, and then use that crystal item in a recipe to make the elemental version. For example, to make a fire crystal sword, you must first create a crystal sword using a stick and crystal the way you'd make any minecraft sword. Then to make the fire crystal sword you'd use the same pattern, but with the crystal sword where the stick would be and 2 fire crystals on top like this:
x
x
S
Where x is a Fire Crystal, and S is a Crystal Sword.
To craft any of the existing dual swords, just craft the 2 swords that make it up together in the crafting table in any pattern.
The crystals are also craftable:
  • Fire Crystal: Smelt a normal crystal
  • Ice Crystal: Surround 1 normal crystal with 8 snowballs
  • Water Crystal: Smelt an Ice Crystal
  • Leaf Crystal: Surround 1 normal crystal with 8 leaves
  • Earth Crystal: Surround 1 normal crystal with 8 hardened/stained hardened clay
  • Air Crystal: Surround 1 normal crystal with 8 firework rockets (how you crafted the rocket doesn't matter; you can even use blank rockets)
  • Ender Crystal: Surround 1 normal crystal with 8 eyes of ender

On top of that, the arrows are craftable as well. Much like how the normal crystal is used for the base of all crafting, you must first create a crystal arrow using the normal arrow recipe, but with a crystal instead of flint. Then to get an elemental arrow, you must surround 8 crystal arrows around the elemental crystal of your choice.

If you're still unsure, you can always look at Minecraft's recipe book -- it's pretty helpful and will even do the tedious parts for you. To unlock all the recipes for a specific element, just get the corresponding crystal for that element in your inventory.

Hope you like it!

cool mod but wouldn't ice be traditional ? is just water hardened buy cool air I
I tried to use the version for minecraft 1.8 and I crafted an earth sword. My 2 problems is that the ore wasn't being displayed correctly in my inventory: i could only see a pink and black block like when the game couldn't find the right texture. Same happened with the sword itself

I will not. I am dropping support for the 1.7.10 version since forge for 1.9 should be coming out relatively soon.

Hey :)
at first I have to say, this is a very nice and useful mod. Thanks for it and I hope you keep it alive.

I have only two little Problems/issues.
First. With this mod I do not receive any dmage when falling down. I can jump 100 blocks deep and still have full life. Instead of damage, I get an error message in the Log.

in singleplayer there are those lines:
https://pastee.org/7bbvm

if I use the mod on my server i get a different errormessage:
" java.lang.ClassCastException: net.minecraft.item.ItemArmor cannot be cast to com.langlitz.elementalitems.items.BaseArmor"
https://pastee.org/pq3g

I wish I can say that I have no other mods installed but I have the following ones:
(17 mods but a few not interesting I think)
https://pastee.org/ttgtc

The Problem is, if I fall down with a horse or boat which can take damage, the Server crashes totally and all
clients will disconnected.
If you need more logs or tests, please let me know. I hope there is a solution without removing other mods :)

MC Version 1.8.9 (mods too)
Forge Version: 11.15.1.1763 (server & client)

Edit

Now I deleted all mods except ElementalItems and Forge, deleted all configs and created a new world to jump
from a mountain^^
Still no falling damage and here's the full log:

latest.log https://pastee.org/ehcnz
fml-client-latest.log pastee.org/9k9y

hope it helps

Thanks for that, I believe I know exactly where the bug is, and if I'm correct, it's intended to prevent the player from taking fall damage when wearing a full Sky set/in lava when wearing full fire set (Player would take fall damage when jumping into lava when wearing fire set because of the way I changed the way the player moves when in lava).

I'll get to work on it right away, thanks for providing as much information as possible!

I am very relieved..first for your engagement (I see there is already an update and I will test it in some minutes :)), and second because it's my first "report" or "appeal for help" in non mother-tonge and the given information were enough.
So thanks a lot and I will edit this comment with my results.

Edit:
Now all works fine, I can die together with my horse and other players can't basejump into caves anymore :)

"Unfortunately" in my first post i wrote "I have only two little Problems/issues." 0:-), so here is the second one.
Its's the special ability of the Earth Sword => strike down. This ends "sometimes" in an error and a server crash. In single player only the errors occur. It's a problem with block particles and/or array out of bounds.

Here the server error: https://pastee.org/xxcuh

And the message if I play singleplayer: https://pastee.org/623rb
(only the particle effects could not spawn)

This time I do not have further logs or information for you but if I should test something, let me know.

Yet a little question/annotation:
In the internal names of the items it looks like that exists "blanks" in the item names e.g
[elementalitems:Earth Shovel]
Some mods can't handle the blank symbol, other ones can.

Example 1 image: http://snag.gy/ObK8K.jpg
JEI can't handle the names if I try to select different earth-tools. The names are truncated on blank.

Example 2 image: http://snag.gy/HHqbX.jpg
VeinMiner can handle the name but I needed several tries to find the right name.

I don't know if it's hard to replace the blanks with underscroes or write together but it is only a note to make it even more compatible with other mods :).

Last but not least
If you want it to translate into german, I can help/do this if I know how. (maybe my struggling english betrayed me)

Regards...

I'll look into the particle bug, which an Array Out of Bounds Exception is pretty easy to fix, but I'm afraid that I can't change the internal names of the items/blocks without people losing those items/blocks from chests, armor stands, item frames, etc in the next day or two. Forge uses those internal names to register the items, and if those names are changed, they will disappear from the world. I'll try to find a way around this, but for now, using NEI and/or using the numerical ID's will help with it. This bug was from before I realized that changing the internal names would remove the items. Thanks for reporting these bugs!

Edit: I honestly don't know why BLOCK_DUST does not exist. It's hard-coded into the game itself so there shouldn't be a reason that it can't be found. I'm also not getting the Array Out of Bounds Exception, but if it's because of my mod, I know where the bug is.
SubEdit:
I believe I know what's going on with the bug. The version of Forge installed on your server is not the recommended version, which is the version this mod was coded in (11.15.1.1722). The recommended version is the version that is almost guaranteed to be stable, while anything after that (labeled "Latest Version") are not guaranteed to be fully functional.

At first, for any help I can provide: You're welcome/no problem and thanks again for fast reply and all the hints.

The thing with the internal names is not a big deal for me. This was only a "discovery" and I wanted to share this litle 'anomaly' with the author :) The names in JEI are only relevant to cheat and I don't want to. I thought NEI is only compatible with MC 1.8, not 1.8.9. That was the reason I choose JEI but I can test NEI later only to be sure, thx. I full understand the item name problem. I only hopped forge provides a possibility to call a magical function to change itemnames at start or so :)

Now the forge and strike down part. I have to say, usually I use only recommended versions of api's, mods etc. but some mods wish to run under a new forge version. In my case it was the "parachutemod-ng mod" and it wants forge 11.15.1.1740 at least. But I can remove it to downgrade.
Now the maybe "bad" news. I tested it with forge recommended 1722 and get errors too.
The Server is not crashing but the client gets disconnected. I did'nt found out in what situations "strike down" works and when not. For me it was randomly ^^.
Now the logs of course: client, server and fml-log at the same time when the error occurs (12:34:00)
The Client (me) has forge 1722 too like the server.
Client: https://pastee.org/se33d
Server: https://pastee.org/mdure (only array out of bounds :))
FML-Server: https://pastee.org/9j3p7 *

* the "Eine bestehende Verbindung wurde softwaregesteuert
durch den Hostcomputer abgebrochen" in the fml log means:
"An existing connection was aborted software-coontrolled by the host-computer".
So maybe not the same error with this forge version but unfortunately an error, sorry for all my problems :D

If you need full logs I will create a new server only with forghe and your awesome mod and give you as much information as you need.

A little question (again)
I dont know if this is desired but with the earth sword you can't block like another
swords? Because when holding the right mouse button it switches raidly between the two modes.
A little image: http://snag.gy/3LL4x.jpg
If you want that then all is fine Otherwise is it possible that the mode "switch" event is only called if mouse is clicked or only on button release to prevent switching while button state is "pressed" (or something like that)

That's it, Thanks again for your evening attention (evening in this country^^^)
also, Can I use it for 1.8.9? I was using it for 1.8.7 before.

Awesome, thanks!
this is so far the only balanced elemental mod I found! great work, but also, I would reduce the chance of finding a sword of life and death, instead of 100% chance, I would put it 50% chance.

I'm really loving this mod!

I have one problem, though: once in a while, getting hit by Ghast fireballs (yeah, I know - don't get hit :) ) will crash the game if I have elemental items (armor / sword) equipped. I've also experienced a crash once with blast damage from TNT. Here's a crash report of me getting hit by a Ghast: http://pastebin.com/d3V80Z2V

Hi, before I start I would like to tell you tell you that this is a GEM of a mod and one that is defenetly under-credited but one defenitly worth finding (And I haven't even tried out the newest version yet) so I have a quite few questions for you:
1. may I use this mod in a modded survival series as the core mod? (not a public modpack, it would be for my channel and if you say no can I at least make a mod review for it?)
2.could you put more cross-element swords in please?
3.could you make elemental crystal blocks (like diamond blocks) even if they are just for decuration?

Thank you for the enthusiasm you have shown for this mod, I am glad you like it :D.
To answer your questions:

1) Yes, you may use this in a modded survival series no matter the situation as long as you don't claim credit for the mod (Which you don't seem like the kind of person who would)
2) Possibly; I was planning on doing so before, but names and textures became a problem and looked/sounded lame
3) Yes, I was also originally going to include those but I was not the best at texturing and the blocks looked bad. I will add those though and I will try to make them look more crystalline than what I was originally intending to do

Thanks for the favorite!

I really do like this mod, but I hate how OP everything is. 4000 Durability? Pfft, my obsidian tools are weaker than that. Is there any way you can tone down the OPness of some of these items?

Thanks for giving me the feedback :D. I should have mentioned this in the description, but all of the ores have a lower chance to spawn than diamond. I also wanted the earth set to have such a high durability because it's the earth itself.  If  more people believe this is too overpowered, I will  tone down some stuff. Thanks for the diamond!
A mod as great as this deserves feedback as well as a diamond! I do like the spawn chance of the ores, this kinda makes it worth the OPness. But the durability (which is mainly what I'm concerned about) for some of the items is still a bit high. 2000 should be the limit, but I prefer at least 1500. This is just my opinion though, you continue to make great mods the way you see fit! ^_^

Sure I'll let you share this mod, just be sure to give me credit :D. What do you mean by "I don't know the bug in this work"? that phrase confused me.

Thanks, and sorry I am not good at English, but I think you can increase the update log and  the bug have been found in your post.
Awesome mod
Hey, I'm really enjoying this mod! I only have 1 question. Whenever I have this mod installed, I can only fly with your Sky Armor set. All of the other mods I've tried (Morph - Bat, Advanced Genetics - Fly Gene, Aethercraft - Ring of Flight) have their flying abilties disabled. Is this intentional? If so, I would greatly appreciate a config file to enable/disable it; it's just a suggestion. Other than that, this mod is amazing!! Keep it up!

That was completely unintended, thanks for finding that :D. It might be difficult to figure out a way to fix that, just because my understanding of forge modding could be better, but I will definitely fix that.

I play with orespawn and still getting this mod because i love over powerd things but i need a vannila set of op stuff epic mod i love it

I noticed that there are no hoes in the mod so I have a suggestion. If you ever add hoes in this mod, you could give each of them a much better power than normal. For instance, the leaf one could generate trees or plants and the air or earth one could create a floating island from the area around you. But either way, love this mod! Diamond~

If I do add more hoes(which I will if more people request it), I will implement your ideas. Thanks for the feedback and the diamond :D

You deserve every diamond you get for this mod! Keep up the great work! :D
I have a suggestion for this mod. Maybe for the Earth armor set, whenever you hit mobs with the sword, dirt will spawn on them and they will suffocate. And for the Air element, maybe when you hit the mobs with any of the tools, it makes them fly up and when they fall they die from fall damage. Just a suggestion!

I might implement that also. I've been rewriting the mod code so that it would be easier to add stuff people suggest, so this could become a mod where the community has a lot of input.
Thats awesome. It's one of my favorite mods since orespawn is to laggy on my computer. Keep up the great work!
