The Augustinians were one of the first orders to arrive to the City of the Kings in the 16th century, and so they were one of the first to have their own Monastery. Construction started in 1573.
1746 it was damaged during the Lima earthquake, and later rebuilt.
After damage during the battle of 1895 which occured between the Pierolists and Cacerists it was later rebuild / remodeled. During that process it lost the large Dome over the crossing. However the churrigueresque facade, the biggest treasure of the churches exterior kept intact and can be seen today on the church.
In the later years a large part of the once huge convent was demolished to make room for a Hotel, the Beautiful tower was demolished in 1908, The stair tower on the right, unfinsihed tower was also removed.
It is one of only Two Churches in Lima that feature a Churrigueresque style facade. The other being La Merced.
