Features:
  • Fully furnished interiors in each and every building - 500+ across the entire map
  • Highways, local transit and regional rail
  • Named streets plus nav system
  • Neighbourhoods ranging from modern downtowns to historic districts
  • 7 unique cities and towns to explore

Overview:

Newisle started with one goal: make a modern and dense city skyline. And it became much, much more than that. The project began all the way back in August of 2010 during the early alpha days and has been kept alive ever since. It's been done entirely solo and is my one and only world save to date.

Since its early days of crude cobblestone structures and basic materials the city has grown substantially into a wide-reaching modern metropolis that spans roughly 600 blocks in each direction. Littered with historic monuments, crisscrossing rail lines and hundreds of fully furnished buildings there's no shortage of sites to see around Newisle and beyond - there are now 6 other independent cities and towns to explore outside of central Newisle.

Grab a mine cart from Union Station or set out on foot using the highway system. A world map is included with each download. The world is yours to explore.

Latest build: Newisle v. 1.1 - released March 28, 2016

FAQ:

Q:
Is 1.2 ever coming out and do you still exist?
A:
Yes. And yes. I started this map while still a college student, so naturally a lot has changed since 2010. There are kids who play this map who weren't even born yet when I first started it, so that's absolutely mind blowing to me. I have a full-time career, a live-in partner with whom marriage and kids are on the horizon (maybe they'll play Minecraft too?) and a whole lot else going on, so I go stretches of months without playing Minecraft. I have added content to Newisle – that much is true. But when is it going to come out? You'll just have to stay tuned.

Q:
Did this really take 8 years to build?

A:
It was built over the course of 8 years, not 8 years straight. I'm dedicated, but jeez, I haven't lost my mind. This was strictly a casual project by someone who likes cityscapes and urban planning. I took a bunch of breaks that ranged from weeks, months and even well over a year at one point. To put it simply, Newisle became one of those "too big to abandon" projects that I updated in between other hobbies and interests. Adding one or two buildings every once in a while just adds up over time.

Q: Is there a server with this map that I can join?
A:
We have a small discussion group over on Reddit at /r/newisle with a white listed server.

Q: How do you pronounce the name?
A:
New. Isle. Like "New Island." No, it's not "Newsie," "News Aisle," or "New Whistle" (lol - I've heard these all). It was originally a series of islands that I linked together back in the alpha days.

Q: What game version does this map use?
A:
The map was worked on up until PC version 1.11.2, so your best bet is to stick to that or later versions. Earlier versions of Minecraft PC may corrupt the save file since this uses blocks from 1.11.2.

Q:
Does this work on Pocket Edition/Windows 10 Beta/consoles?
A:
An unofficial port for Pocket Edition is available for download here, though be advised this was ported over by a third party. Newisle was built entirely in the PC Java version and you're free to try to convert the world save at your own discretion.

Q:
Can I use your map for my project or server?
A:
Of course. As long as you provide credit where credit is due I'm supportive of anything the Minecraft community does with this map.

Q:
Was this built in Survival?
A:
No, the map began when Creative mode didn't exist yet but ever since Creative was introduced I've used it exclusively and have never claimed otherwise.

Q:
Did you use any editing software?
A:
Yes, I used WorldPainter for some of the more detailed terrain, such as the mountains, and for smoothing out parts of the map that had gotten ruined by game updates over the years. I also used MC Edit for many tedious things like placing roads and for precise tasks like doing multiple stories in the buildings. Otherwise, there would have been countless times when builds would be 1 or 2 blocks off and would have needed a complete restart. And who would want to do that?

Q: What did you use to make the maps with (the images that come with the download)?
A: The terrain map was made with uNmINeD mapper. The rest are my own creations in Photoshop.

Q:
What inspired you to build this map?
A:
Besides having a bit of an interest in urban planning, I like skyline and cityscape photography a lot, so Newisle is kind of an extension of that. The buildings themselves are inspired by my real world home city of Toronto as well as New York, Chicago and Montreal.

Nice map, my friends and I played this map on a private server and it was pretty fun.
AWESOME!
Hey, I've downloaded this map for the Java version, but I can't get it to convert to a .mcworld file so I can use it on Windows 10 version and play with people on Xbox, can anybody who knows how to convert it properly send me a link to download the correct mcworld version of this amazing map?
can someone give me the coordinates for the prison? Thx
Hey Blip, may I know what was the purpose of abandoning South Isle station and just building another one on top of it?

Just an aesthetic choice because of the river. The Line 3 tunnel is pretty close to the surface and it blocked up the river basin, so I made Eastcliff, formerly South Isle, an elevated station.
Just made a Timelapse of Newisle, in case anyone wants to check it out: Newisle Timelapse

I would end up living in this in my main series on my YT channel but I don't think all the mods im using have been updated to 1.11 yet STILL!!!

PS the series is called El Has' Adventure.

All the mods are for 1.10 and my computer doesn't let me install another Forge client!!
Hello fellow minecrafters! So, I was thinking about updating the rail systems with "Real Train Mod", but the latest version for that mod is currently 1.10.2. What problems would I face when trying to play on 1.10?
It' on 1.12.2 now!!
I run the normal (non-lights out) version on my server for Blip Noir. Check out the details on his subreddit /r/newisle

Nope, 'Lights Out' Edition just removes all the torches, glowstone and all other lighting sources.

Is anyone using this map on a server? Feels like it lacks people, villagers aren't exactly sentient.
What kind of blocks does this map use from 1.11.2? What would happen if I tried using 1.7.10? I love the map, but the only thing is that it's for 1.11.2 or later. I want to use this map for a roleplay server but all the good mods were for 1.7.10. But good job anyways.

The majority of chests have been left empty, though you can find shops and homes that occasionally have useful stuff inside.
My reason for 1.7.10 is that I wanna use it with my cars mod and security mod
I NEED A 1.7.10 VERION PLZ GIVE IT TO ME T_T

Use Minecraft version 1.11.2 or later, reinstall the map and check if you have any mods or texture packs that might affect the signs. Hope that helps.
There's a Stronghold Under Rockwood that I found when on spectator mode.

P.S. There isn't an End Portal for some Reason.

There is a newisle folder inside the newisle folder, that's the one you want its next to the 1.1 new features and map installations instructions and place it where you normally would when loading up your single player file.
