I am hosting a Speed Build Contest. Have a look at it and if you are interested, you should enter.
This is the fourth stadium in my Olympic venue series. It is by far the largest build i have ever done in minecraft (with a footprint of nearly 2.4 million sqft or about 219000 sqm, over 120000 sqm more than my Olympic Stadium). The stadium takes design cues from the Arena das Dunas (Stadium of the Dunes) in Natal, Brazil, designed by Populous for the World Cup. Their design was to emulate the shapes of the dunes that surround the city of Natal, and create an urban catalyst by providing a space that could serve multiple purposes outside of the World Cup.
My design takes their idea of using the shells to enclose certain parts of the stadium, but uses them more effectively as a roof to the stadium, rather than just an enclosure. The shells are divided where the stadium lights are placed. The contours of the shell are formed by four distinct shapes, the two on the taller side (spanning the length of the stadium) creates a level of continuity between it and the previous Olympic venues, and the two on the ends (spanning the width of the stadium) create a cap and fully encloses the stadium. They join delicately at the edge to create a seamless border for the aperture in the roof.
This is not entirely finished, as on each end of the caps, i am planning to build shops and on the side (screened in on either side), there will be an enclosed park. I will be adding these at a later date.
Also a few notes on the redstone aspects of this build:
-All 12 stadium lights will turn on and off automatically based on the time day (they will turn on just after sunset, and turn off before sunrise)
- Due to the size of the build, lights may not look like they are working, this is likely due to the chunk not updating, and thus the lights will appear to either be off or on when they aren't suppose to. Just go near them, and they should work normally.
- Due to the nature of MCEdit, the schematic may have some problems with the redstone when importing, just be aware of this when importing it into your world.
Dimensions: 391 x 559 x 112 (17m set below grade)
