This is a hard project as I am the first who creates such a machine and the whole flying technology is a new topic in Minecraft so there are not many creations and tricks invented to make it easier to build more complicated stuff. I have to discover all the tricks and create the required mechanisms by myself. If anyone wants to help me with this project, please send me a private message.
The goal is to create a device that will allow players to move flying structures in two directions (and I plan to extend this to four, or even all 6 directions) and control the movement of the structure while standing on it without any stations to stop and change direction. Instead of having stations for the flying machine with redstone devices to stop/redirect it, players will be able to move freely and land on stations that just look like a place where flying machines should land, or even fly to places where it's really hard to land, and use a little up-down flying structure that is stored inside the big flying machine to get down and come back to the machine without even having to find a good place for landing.
Imagine a PVP map with ships that actually move and shoot at each other, or even better - a space map where there are no blocks at all, except for huge planets that you can reach only by travelling in a space ship! This could be a good adventure map or a survival challenge. This technology is also very useful for survival, flying machines can do mining for us (I will start working on it when I'll finish with this project which is the base to all others), they can clear laval seas in the nether to make it a safer place for us and to create a huge flat ground for us to build on, they can let us travel through the nether above lava lakes and through falling lava and stay protected from ghasts, they can be used even to delivering massive amounts of items to a very far place without any track... Just use your imagination, there are soooooooo many uses to this technology! And if I get it compact enough, it might be even very easy and cheap to build many of these in survival!

Please leave a diamond if you are interested in such a technology, I wanna know I don't work for nothing! Well, I do it for fun, but still... It's nice to know someone out there is going to use my technology to create a lot of awesome stuff :)

Progress reports (1)
I built an almost 100% stable structure (can't be sure yet because I'm unable to test it) that should be able to move forward and backwards.
I need to build a working bidirectional rope to make it work, then I will test the machine and will upload an image of how it looks.

It is a work in progress project that I'm too lazy to finish right now because I prefer much more to play TFC (challenging survival mod) right now, but I will probably finish it one day :P

I doubt its possible because each piston can only move so many blocks...

A piston can push/pull up to 12 blocks, but there are ways to deal with this problem. Otherwise I wouldn't able to create the fast flying engine that is 14 blocks. I will upload soon (tomorrow or in two days) a guide about flying technologies - I will explain how to move more than 12 blocks and show how to deal with few other problems about flying machines.
