IJN Hiryu (full interrior)

IJN Hiryū was a Japanese aircraft carrier of the Sōryū-class, but built with unique features that made her almost a separate class. Launched in 1937, she was 227 meters (745 feet) long and had a full-load displacement of about 20,250 tons. Powered by steam turbines, she could reach speeds of 34.3 knots (63.5 km/h or 39.5 mph).


Hiryū carried around 73 aircraft, including Mitsubishi A6M Zeros, dive bombers, and torpedo planes. Her island structure was placed on the port (left) side — unusual for aircraft carriers — and she had a single long flight deck for launch and recovery operations.


She fought in several major early-war operations, including Pearl Harbor, Darwin, and the Indian Ocean raid. At the Battle of Midway in June 1942, Hiryū was the only Japanese carrier to launch a successful counterattack, crippling USS Yorktown. But later the same day, U.S. dive bombers found and fatally damaged her. She sank on June 5, 1942.
