The City of Westminster map is the main focus and project on The London Project server. Where a skilled team of builders aim to recreate the whole of london inside the bounds of minecraft.
London is one of the worlds most recognisable cities on the planet. However London is more than just a city. It is a sprawling array of unique boroughs, each special in their own right. The city centre only makes up a small part of the landscape we've come to know as London.
This map captures all of London in its surroundings. From Heathrow Airport in the west all the way to Dartford Crossing in the far east.
The map was created using an open source tool created by Christopher Gutteridge of the University of Southampton, using readily available UK.GOV Lidar data collected by flying an aircraft over the majority of the United Kingdom and reflecting a light off the ground and its surrounding buildings. The accuracy of lidar is how we are able to create london is such stunning detail. Many attempts of London have been done in the past. However, none to this level of accuracy. It is common for recreations to run into issues late into the project due to calculation errors and guess work that is needed to work out where buildings should go. With Lidar on the other hand, things are more absolute. We already know the position of every building in London allowing us to work where ever we like and still have everything line up and be exactly where it is supposed to be.
The current map is 60 kilometers squared. With the potential to be expanded in future as needed.
Current progress includes the following areas:
-Westminster
-Trafalgar
-Waterloo
-Canary Wharf

2) Custom models ie trains
3) BTE use dynmaxion projection so the orientation isn't compass-accurate, but we use compass-accurate (ie North is North irl) LIDAR satellite data.
