When I realized that my Medieval Well could be a little tricky to use, I took another swing at building one. If you dig a 2x2 block hole and fill it with water (that will only take two buckets in total, by the way), that could technically already be considered a well, since from that point on you can right-click on any one of the four water blocks and it'll just fill back up. My design is basically just a spruced up version of this basic principle. But I hope you'll agree with me that it looks a lot less scanty.
