This is my entry for the PMC Contest: Head into the Clouds

Video courtesy of Rooster Teeth and Achievement Hunter. This was from their series MegaCraft, hosted by Matt and Trevor

Project Sanctuary was humanity's many efforts to survive the aftermath of the rift. When rifts first started to appear in the world, like in the Nether, it caused similar electrical disturbances. Initially it began as low level electromagnetic interference, primarily affecting electronics. But as the months went on, the effects became stronger. Powerful electric fields around the rifts would pulse, causing iron deposits in the earth to be thrown into the atmosphere. Project Sanctuary was proposed as a fortified habitat that could be insulated from the effects of the electromagnetic pulses, and protect its inhabitants. The only problem was with a world beginning to shatter, there was a limited amount of space that these Sanctuaries could hold. Every major city built as many as they could. Lotteries were held to choose who could stay. When the rift let out a final burst of energy, it destroyed 95% of the existing landmass, causing mass flooding on the remaining 5%. Some of the landmass thrown into the sky held together enough, and some of the Sanctuary towers survived.

A Sanctuary tower had every necessity that a small settlement could need, with a maximum capacity of about 3000 people. Once things seemed to settle, they began to disassemble the roof, and begin building the agriculture tower. This ensured the Sanctuary would always have food and building supplies. All rooms are furnished with basic necessities.

Currently, what is completed is the Sanctuary tower, three partially destroyed bridges, twelve buildings of what remains of the city, and two highways. This is going to be the final major update for the contest. Until the contest ends (on the 30th), i will be searching my entry for mistakes. If you find something that isn't working, let me know, and i will tend to it immediately.

Using Default Texture Pack

Dimensions: 175 x 83 x 194

Lastly, I am hosting a Speed Build Contest. Have a look at it and if you are interested, you should enter.
Progress: 100% Complete

Update #2 : 07/27/2014 8:57:06 pm7/27/14

Added a second destroyed highway, added five more buildings, and another destroyed bridge. This should be the final major update before the contest closes. The project is at 95% complete to say that i will be dealing with minor mistakes and issues for the next couple of days that may be in the project. Let me know if you find any mistakes.

Update #1 : 07/17/2014 10:29:56 am7/17/14

Fixed stairs, added destroyed highway, extended destroyed maglev train rail into city, added several buildings including another Sanctuary tower. Also added a schematic of a Sanctuary tower

This is amazing, you are so talanted to make that first building in mc, I have no doubt you have the potential to be an amazing architect. Also you managed to build this alone, where almost all of the other high up contest entries were made with teams!

Thank you for the compliments, it's really encouraging to hear. I'm really surprised at how well mine did considering the competition I was facing. Even some of the other solo projects were pretty amazing, but I was clearly outclassed by the team effort that won. It was an incredible build

Thank you. I've followed your work for quite some time, so this means a lot :)
I really love this modern post-apocalyptic build, very creative concept. Congratulations with 6th place. In my opinion it should be higher (fantasy, steampunk etc. meh), I can't wait for more contests with your entries!

Based on building quality and difficulty, i understand why fantasy and steampunk builds are marked so high. They are difficult to build and put in the necessary details. It's in that where their complexity arises. I'm glad the one that won did, it was a spectacular project, and with a team of 13 incredible builders, it easily outclassed mine by a long shot. I appreciate the compliments though, it's really encouraging to hear, especially with this being my first official PMC contest. And if i can come up with a decent idea for the next one, i may consider entering again.
Yes, that's true, fantasy and steampunk need time and details. Sometimes I think, that people who are making this stuff more think and do about the background than the building itself for instance in To The Stars Project Contest.

While i'm not as familiar with those entries, i can see what you mean. But still, these contests are about creating impressive maps, and what goes on in the background can be just as important as the main thing.
I agree up to a point. Sure this is all about creating impressive maps, but when the winning entry wins mostly because of background while not having much to expose with the main thing, contest itself changes its name to "background contest".

I can understand that, especially when there is a focus (like making a spaceship). In this contest, there really didn't have to be a focus, so that seems to be less of a problem
Just like people say in my country: "O gustach sie nie dyskutuje", which means the taste is not discussed. ;]

I honestly have no idea. The tower's interior is well lit, and the rooms all have beds and can be lit up as well, so you are safe from mobs and whatnot. But there really isn't a way to get across from islands, there aren't that many resources around, so you could live, as there should be plenty of resources such as wood, food, etc., but you wouldn't be able to craft much else without dismantling the surrounding buildings and the towers themselves. Just the way the map itself was made, it was never meant to have the resources that a regular world would have.

It was indeed higher than I expected but where almost everyone went for fantasy stuff you went for more realisme in the buildings which gave you more points for concept & originality that you made you higher up I think.

Anyway onwards to your contest, I look forward to it.

After a look into the map some things catched my eyes.

- Most of the towers are plain empty, in a sense of nothing. For example the hexapattern (6sides) tower has a central staircase system. That makes the tower already more realistic. So try to make a bit more interior after all I suppose you mc-edit the whole thing towards the height you want.
- Infrastructure. The roads are nice but end up in nothing, try to give a ringway feeling at least. Same for metro/shuttle/train systems, or at least end stations. Maybe do something with collapsed tunnels.
- As last maybe plant some seeds in the agriculture tower, it will look more habital then.

Anyway I think I can safely say: congrats on the finals.

Update: I was able to plant things (hopefully they stuck in the file, seemed to on my end). Also, they should have livestock in them now (cows, sheeps, and pigs. Chickens tend to escape and traipse across my crops lol)

Most towers have stair cores (except for two that were far too "damaged" for me to make ones that would satisfy what i wanted from them). I am pleased with how they turned out. As far as furnishing them any further, i do not intend to. The city is meant to be overgrown, partially submerged (from the movement of the land), and what would have remained would have already been salvaged by those living in the Sanctuary tower. They are not meant to be habitable (as is noted by them being severely damaged, and one having fallen over).

And i still can't make a decent ramp for my highway that i like. I think i need more space for it, as it is rather tight around some of the buildings, and i'm not willing to shift things around with there only being less than 7 hours left in the contest.

Again, thank you for the suggestions.

The interiors to the towers seems like a good idea, i'll try to do that. I've been rushing buildings out to try and seed the city some.

Regarding the highways, i considered that, but in every attempt, it wasn't coming out to my liking. I may try again to put in some ramps and whatnot, but no promises on that. A train station might not be a bad idea either, i may come up with something.

And as far as the seeds, i had some difficulty growing stuff in the central section of the ag tower. For some reason, i would come back to the file, and all of the wheat i had planted just seemed to disappear. The back section (the one that is all grass) is meant to hold livestock. I'll make sure to put them in again (had an odd infestation of cows inside the living quarters, so i deleted all of the entities lol).

Thanks for the suggestions

I'm new, and am confused a bit about the leveling system. Are you leveled based on your build, and if so, is it for every certain amount of diamonds/subs you get on your account/build?

Anyway, AMAZING build, it almost looks like it could fit into the new game "Destiny", because it seems like a Futuristic-Post-Apocalyptic society!

Diamond and sub for you!

It's based on the amount of the Xp you get for anything. You get one XP per view, 1 per download, I think you get 10 per new subsriber, 5 per diamond, and 7 per favorite. You also get 1 per comment, it seems. I can be wrong, but so far, it look like this.

It is difficult to actually say what kind of style this is in. it is a hypothetical design, using somewhat contemporary design language, but i don't quite know what style it would fall under. Curious, what were you referring to with the quartz? i didn't quite understand that
put Quartz instead of iron blocks

I see what you mean, but i wanted to differentiate the materials in the structure, using quartz as a covering/wall and using the iron as the structural members
This concept is fantastic. An amazing start for an RPG game. I love it bro! Diamond for you! :)
