Hello,
this is the SS Tsar Kaloyan, named after Kaloyan of Bulgaria, emperor (or in Bulgarian, tsar) of Bulgaria from 1197 to 1207. He famously defeated and captured Latin Emperor Baldwin of Flandre in the battle of Adrianople (1205).
The ship's history is very interesting, as it is the direct ancestor of the Bulgarian Warrior-class of ships. It was hastily built in 1915, during WW1, and immediately went into service as a troopship, built in just under 21 months. The features required for a troopship later compromised some of its passenger carrying qualities (for example, part of the 1st class dining room is right above the engine rooms). Up until 1924, the ship operated half-completed, reminding in appearance the SS Belgenland before its rebuild. In 1924 it was rebuilt as a wholly passenger liner, operating in the Trans-Atlantic route. In WW2 it served a troopship. Post-WW2, it was rebuilt again, as a cruise liner, serving under the name Georgi Dimitrov until 1966, later sold and renamed Caribbean Grande. Under that name it operated with various other companies, before being sold for scrap in late 1999. It arrived in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, in 2000 and scrapping was completed the same year.
Special thanks to BusinessCreeper for these awesome renders!
