The Museum Anahuacalli in Mexico City 🇲🇽
The Anahuacalli is a unique building built in 1964 by none other than famous painter, Diego Rivera to house his collection of Mesoamerican artifacts. At the time, modernist architecture movements from Europe were popularizing in Mexico, but the Mexican populace felt that modernist architecture contrasted with Mexico’s environment and culture so Riviera designed the Anahuacalli as a museum for the people, and as a Mexican countermovement to modern architecture. He states himself that the building is directly inspired from Aztec and Mayan architecture. The building is almost entirely designed from an Mesoamerican perspective and lacks the European influence that’s found in almost every other building since the conquest.
