Welcome to my build for the skyscraper community challenge from jduartemiller.
The Skyscraper is build on a small island in a ocean world.
NOTE: This build finished on the 6 place out of 9 entries.

Features:
Island:
- Harbor.
- Farm, animal & food.
- Smith, almost part of the skyscraper.
Skyscraper:
Main:
- Gathering/meeting hall.
- Council hall, includes library and administration places.
-
2 Story cellar, with;
Prison
Kitchen
Storage, including large wine barrels.
Common part:
- Small market.
- Inn with sleeping places.
Private:
- Small dining hall.
- Small bathhouse.
- 4 Multiple persons rooms.
- 4 Husband & wife rooms.
- Treasure room.
- Outlook point, top of the skyscraper.

The idea:
The skyscraper is based on a picture from my memory. The pictures was about an old wooden small Scandinavian
church
(this one comes the closest regarding my memory). The surrounding is roughly based on the starting
lighthouse of the first Bioshock.
I didn't want to build an empty shell so I made an exterior and a interior.

Interior:
The interior of the Skyscraper is a bit based on a old project of mine. Let two different types of usage of the building in one, but so you 'barely' notice it. At the entrance floor you can go three ways.
1: To the cellar, also a way to the little harbor. Also the main storage and the prison of the island.
2: 'Market' and inn, this is for the entertainment and stuff buying. For this usage you have to use ladders.
It is an optional place to go. These are placed on the floors where lesser space is due to the space using of the 3th option.
3: Private/living. Wide stairs to go up. First you will encounter the 'Congress' place with a large table and other official stuff. Behind the adminsistration the housevesting start. Reconigesable by the birch slaps as floor. It starts with the dining/bathing quarters before going up, with ladders, to the sleeping quarters. And finally on top the treasure room and two hatches to the outlook point.
Download & experience yourself, since these words are a bit rambling.

Exterior:
The starting lighthouse in Bioshock stands fierce in the middle of the ocean. So does this skyscraper but than with a small island.
While planting trees I tried for the first time acacia and well I like them. Still I use the oak trees on the cliff side of the island. That is also a two splitting thing of the build but than with trees.
I didn't make a lot of windows because the skyscrape should catch a lot of wind. I used fences for the windows so the wind can blow through and preventing the wood from rotting at the window places.
Also I used jungle wood for the harbor through the durability in harsh conditions like the sea.

Other:
The building materials were brought from several places in the mainlands.

Additional Notes

Screenshots:
Minecraft settings: Max
Video-card settings: Max quality
forced anti-aliasing x16 on high quality same for anisotropic filter.
Mipmap detail on high quality.
Note: It kills my framerate so my pc isn't that good.

Update #1: detail overhaul : by eagoy 02/23/2014 4:15:26 amFeb 23rd, 2014

Due to the extended date of the community challenge I did a detail overhaul.

Island:
- Added bushes, leaves.
- Added different blocks to the stone.
- Added a ship in the harbor, still not great but better than older ships of mine.
- Made the interior of a coalmine I forgot to do.

Skyscraper:
Every level got more detail.
Especially the market & inn.

It does look like that indeed.

For the contest (that runs till march 19 this year, so enter if you like) is used the 19 century definition of a skyscraper. In other words it needs to be higher than 42 meters. From top floor till normal floor is already 48 meters. If you add the 2 story cellar and top it becomes even more.

Besides that I decided to make high floors (6 blocks) instead of small heights (4 blocks) per floor.
That gives it indeed more a towerish look. But it gives me more space to do things with the interior which I like to do since I dislike empty builds.
