The prototype LZ 1 (LZ for "Zeppelin airship") was 128 m long, measured 11.65 m in diameter. To balance (trim) of about 13 tons of heavy construction used is a between the front and rear cable movable 130 kg heavy weight. 11,300 cubic meters of hydrogen ensured as carrier gas for buoyancy, but the payload was only about 300 kg.
On July 2, 1900 at 20:03 of the first ascent of the airship was in Manzell bay under the eyes of about 12,000 spectators instead lakefront and on boats. The trip took 18 minutes, then the winds broke for the balance weight and LZ 1 was forced to land on the water.
