He was the doctor who fought during the time war, which ultimately ended with the destruction of Gallifrey, Skaro and all the Timelords and the Daleks. From Christopher Ecclestons era we know that he was the cause of the destruction, however I would greatly reccomend you watch The Day of the Doctor as it is really really awesome!!! :)
