New Submission Feature

Hello, I am sending this ticket to suggest a new type of submission.

I realized that when people want to make their own texture pack by just mixing textures of other packs together or just to use a single texture, there's no option to look for individual textures on Planet Minecraft, you either download the whole pack everytime or you have to use a different page.

So I thought about suggesting a new submission type that would let you search for individual textures of blocks, items, audio clips... Basically anything related to texture packs, that way those people would have it way easier, and people like me that like making random textures would be able to get inspired more easily by looking at other people's work, as well as uploading said individual textures for the world to see and use.

I think the new type of submission could be named just "Single Texture" or something similar, and the way it would work would be choosing the type of the file and uploading it (the .png, .ogg or any other type of asset minecraft uses) and then specifying the type of file it is, for example if people are looking for stone textures, they could search for the specific "stone.png" file and so on with the rest of the textures.

In conclusion, this new type of submission could open more doors for people that like messing around with textures and would maybe even attract more users to Planet Minecraft. Its addition would be very beneficial for everyone and I think everyone would enjoy such thing.

Unfortunately this not likely to become a reality in that form.

Primarily due to the nature of copyright and plagiarism. PMC already has policies against reusing other people's work without permission.
A feature that allows people to mix and match would lead to increased situations of people using someone else's textures and not even realizing it.

The solution here would be a tool that allows mixing and matching of textures and creates a submission that also lists where each texture came from. Basically like a collection. That way the original creators can still get credit.

Other users would be able to download this submission and it would compile the texture pack for the user and give them a download.

But finally, the real issue is the logistical challenge. People package their texture packs differently. If someone used a 3rd party host, PMC could not use that texture pack. If they host on PMC, we could use it but people will still have different formats such as:

  • Zip file with textures are root
  • Zip file with a folder at the root and textures inside that folder
  • Zip file with 2 folders
  • Zip file with another zip file inside
  • Zip file with textures and multiple zip files for previous versions
  • Etc.
Basically you can't control the format people will publish their texture pack, so it would be a nightmare to cover all of the possible combinations.

You would also need a way to support multiple Minecraft versions for the mixing and matching. This means in the site code, you would need ways to convert all texture pack versions to a standard format. This would be very difficult to pull off.

So overall, I like the idea! But I don't believe it would be possible to make a one-size-fits-all solution.
