Hello ladies and gentlem- (oh look a butterfly)
Today I'll be talking about the decline of good Minecraft servers.

I remember when I first started playing Minecraft, back in the good ol' Beta days, the first server I ever played on. It was one of my friend's servers that he hosted on his computer, and I got on and he trolled me by using MobDisguise to disguise himself as a pig and shoot arrows at me. I, meanwhile, was freaking out, trying to figure out why something kept hitting me out of nowhere. It was good fun, back when Minecraft was simple. Now, more and more, I see servers that aren't up for you to have fun, but rather to spend money. They make the default gameplay really hard so that you'll go buy their $30 donation packages, and then make the server even worse, with overpowered people flying around and causing chaos.
Then, you get the servers that are run by small children. With names such as BeastModeCraft or BossCraft, these endless faction/PvP servers seem to only exist to clutter up Minecraft server sites. Typically, their server listing looks something like this:

[1.6]BEASTMODECRAFT [FACTIONS] [PVP] [TOWNY] [MCMMO] [HARDCORE] [GREAT STAFF] [24/7]

We Are A Great New Factions Server With Tons Of op Donations Apply For Staff At Our website beastmodecraft123456.enjin.com

What happened to the small community, free of McMMO and Factions? I hope you're asking the same question.

Please diamond, favorite, and subscribe to help me keep blogging!

I've been on this great server where you have to WORK to get a rank.
The first rank was:
be on for 2 hours, mine 640 stone, and kill 50(or something) monsters.
the next rank was all that but doubled and so on.

the funny thing is, it was in a vanilla server and everything was done by command blocks!

I agree. Factions is overrated and the players on factions are undesirables. Also some servers have stupid donation packages of $300 or something, what is that about? I built my server to be different, we don't have factions but instead nations, real nations, real governments & real laws players follow but its fun because we have nations but also a creative area, a survival world, a nations world ect... You can have a bit of everything. And its easy to get items in survival, someone made a flans mod plane in 10 minutes of a new world but we do offer donation packages but nothing silly, maybe £5 to show players love to the server but thats it.
I know right?? I once played on a faction server with donations ranging between $10 and $300... AND PEOPLE BOUGHT THE 300 ONE! It was ridiculous... And guess what? They closed after about 3 months. I guess they made enough money to satisfy them...

Yeah, this has been a real problem for like the last year and a half. It's terrible how desperate these people are to be on top that they try to take the easy way up with factions. Fortunately, the only ever rarely work out. I for one actually prefer vanilla over factions, because the factions jerks won't go there. I even recently started up a Beta 1.7.3 server to try to relive the good old days with people.

i got tired of most servers because they were all ran by little children's -_-'
I joined 1.0 official release and then unitl 1.2 servers we're good small survival ones with nice communicity. I remember how fun it was to come back from school and explore something new, but now thanks to the crappy factions servers minecraft is ruined. And if you want to stop this faction chaos then message me and i will gonna tell the plan. Oh and if you are looking for nice small non-factions server then go to my account page and check the ip. I won't gonna tell it at here because then it will gonna count as advertising. My server has no griefing or stealing just pvp and it also doesn't have factions. Yeah there is mcMMO and pvp but no smell from griefing, stealing, raiding or factions. It is just survival with cool plugins and stuff to explore.
Ik, and then sometimes you get addicted to the server and some how choose to pay for it. Then later realizing it wasnt worth it because it just got boring.

I joined Minecraft at 1.5.2 so I really don't know how you feel. :/

Still, I find these faction servers annoying. I mean, some are really good but others have these trolling admins or spawn campers and such.

Makes me leave one almost as soon as I join.

I used to have a freebuild creative server, and I know what you mean. It's really sickening to go on the server list to see something shoved in your face about VIP benefits and donations, and all the gigantic servers owned by 'gaming networks', etc. It's all become a business...

Well, I have a kit PvP server... I don't know if you mean that when you say PvP or if you mean survival PvP... But at least mine is different, without 300 different kits and 8 billion soups per kit... I hate those ones. Anyway, back to the blog. It is ridiculous how many people post their servers and junk when they are stupid home-run servers that are down 98% of the time. Ruins it for dedicated servers like mine, and a whole lot of other peoples.

This is what I'm trying to avoid completely! I've made the donation packages not too overpowered but juuuust right. No flying crap, no overpowered equipment; just nice little perks including format codes and such alike. I agree though, I think I cluttered my text a little too much so I'll work on that.

I'm trying to make my server 100% community-based with unique features too. Anyway, great blog, great thinking and great work! If you want to see my server, you can see it here on Planet Minecraft! It's just over twenty four hours old. :)

I'm completely with you, I've spent the past 3 or so months just developing my server and getting some good staff members. I've been striving to make sure my server is community based, with a bit of something for every type of gamer. It's hard though...the thing about making great community servers is that it takes a lot of dedication and time..but in the end, it will be worth it.!

Well if you want, I can tell you the ip of a NON faction server, its all survival (with plugins made by our owner himself, and some other plugins) But I do agree its getting abusive how much faction servers goes ''to the top'' if you see what I mean (I'm not english so I don't really find the word right now)

That's the thing. I do agree with you on so many levels, unfortunately the unique servers with actual communities get lost in the clutter. I know as an example the server I play on, we have a full custom modpack and a huge world yet we haven't really been noticed on a huge level yet. I'm not complaining however as the players we have now are great.

Great blog, Diamond.

My server used to get 50+ players on all the time, and had a great community, now it gets 10 - 20 players because advertising is so scarce now. I bump my PMC post and 5 minutes later it's clear back on page 5 because of all the identical abusive faction servers everywhere. MY server has been running for 3 years, and MC has changed. For the worst.

OH MY GOWD!!!! Soo true man.. I have this problem and similar problems. if you have noticed there is also a decline in good staff. BTW none of my servers ever get popular even after a year of hard work. :( then i see these other servers who are completely ridiculous with their staff, rules, and donations, AND THEY STILL GET MONEY AND POPULARNESS! i just don't get it.. I add a bunch of activities, donator perks (that don't ruin gameplay for everyone else.. mainly like /nick or /tpa). anyway, usually every server I go on seems like fun until i go on it, then end up jailed, kicked or banned for some stupid ridiculous reason. also have you noticed the amount of people that come on ask for OP or something, and if they don't get it they leave & don't come back? honestly, people are just playing for the rank, they don't care if they "like" the server or not. 2lazy2pickaName, DONT START WITH THAT CRAP! That is business that nobody wants to start with. YOU START A SERVER FOR FUN, NOT MONEY. MULTIPLAYER IS FOR HAVING A GOOD TIME WITH OTHERS ON MINECRAFT. I can't stand servers these days.. I want to crawl in my singleplayer hide away cave... JK lol

Well, he has a point. People who get revenue from their servers also have more money to advertise, so when minecraft kids search up "pvp faction survival" and shit, their server listings will definitely beat yours. They are also attracted to the already established high amount of players to associate with. To be honest, you shouldn't really care about your popularity if you host your server for fun. You should just focus on being active with the community and earn some regulars.

And see, you're the first person I've manage to find that agrees with me. I mean, it's hard to find an actual good server. Personally, I don't know why everyone has so much fun about playing factions. Stealing, griefing, and breaking an 8 year old's dreams. When I find a good server where the community is nice, I'm ecstatic.

And now to play devil's advocate:

You must keep in mind we live in a world where a smart business owner (a rather cold hearted one) will do whatever he/she wants to exploit ever dollar and cent out of it's target market.
The Target Market for Minecraft is young kids. Young kids hate to work for things and want everything outlined and simple. They also want instant gratification and to be entertained at all times. So your job as an owner is to make this happen if you want those kids' money. Give them diamonds, enchantments, money, etc. so they dont have to work for it. Give them exclusive commands so they feel special and have bragging rights. Set the higher ranks to a bit more over powered than usual to make more people want to rule your server because kids hate losing so if they spend $100, they will not lose.
So depending on your server here is what you do:
- Just want to run a nice MC server; then you dont "need" donations. Donating is simply for those who like your server enough and want it to be kept up and running. Originally you should be running YOUR server off of your own money, do not rely on anyone else.
- Want to run a MC server as a business; then you do not "need" donations. You actually dont receive them at all. You are a business and by selling ranks/items/mcmmo/perks etc. you make money to cover the expenses.

As for server owners who cry about not getting recognized when you deserve it... (I will save this for a future blog... Nah I will just forget) you DO NOT DESERVE ANYTHING! You are 150% just jealous you are not getting money from your server. It is that simple. Want to be a top server? Reap the money out of your customers (people who play on your server) all the while maintaining it with maturity. You will then need to know how to manage money to save up donations or purchases over the months (yes i said it... MONTHS). 3-7 months of your server being up and if you DESERVE to be a well known server, then you will have roughly $1200+ and then spend maybe $900+ to bid on an advertisement on other server lists. You will then need to be able to pay for DOS protection, a website, hire mature staff because you can not and will not handle this server with 80+ players on your own successfully, hire a graphics designer/web designer if you can not do it yourself, upgrade your server a few times, and then maybe pay to advertise again.
Running a MC server requires maturity, experience, patience, wisdom, and hardwork/dedication. You will have that one server who will sell OP or ADMIN for $50 but they will be unknown in less than 5 months. Be patient and if you deserve it, your time will come. Trust me, I am halfway through the process now... Oh wait I spent all my servers profit on a brand new XPS 15 laptop for college, other games, and just because I could.

Sorry to rant in your comments bro... lol.

If one has to explain why/how their server is good, then it is NOT good lmao!

My server is about having fun. We don't have McMMO or factions. Our server is mostly vanilla survival and creative with no donation packages. I go to other servers now and completely get bored as soon as I spawn. One of my server members said the same thing and that our server was better than any other. People care more about money than they do fun and it's a sad growing trent. I like small servers with real people with a real community with heartfelt people in it. :)

I partly agree with some of the stuff you're saying, however, you do gotta keep in mind, that you HAVE to get donations somehow, if you're running a rather large server as some of us actually do, server costs, website expenses, TS/Mumble expenses and all that, quickly run up to being 150-250 USD a month. IF that's the case, we kinda do need to sell "overpriced" 30 USD packages :> Of course, you can always be smart about it, i do agree that some servers make it completely unfair, which isnt exactly needed.

It's just so true... Always been looking for a good server. Hopping daily from one to another server. Then you think you find the right one, is it ruined by a server reset once in a while.

The only thing I want is a lite-vanilla minecraft server with some protection plugins and you dont need staff on those technacly seen. But yea... those are uber rare or they are already ruined by others....

When will there be a GOOD minecraft server...
