Introduction:
There has always been a fascination when it comes to implementing technology into the Minecraft world. In this tutorial I will show you how to make gears in Minecraft. I’m sure there are other ways to obtain the same results if not better, but this style has worked for me in the past and makes it a more hands on experience when building.
In this 6 step tutorial I will show you side by side images of your personal artwork and the in game creation of making these gears. This is an easy guide if you have some Minecraft building experience. Depending on the size of the gear you are looking to make, it will vary the completion time in making one. So let’s begin our adventure together!

Recommended programs:
o Minecraft - (any version)
o Paint
o WorldEdit – (version compatible with your Minecraft)
Technical overview:
-These are some things to keep in mind when working between paint and worldedit in relation to Minecraft.
o Circles in paint vs Worldedit
o Using worldedit command: //cyl stone 22
o Thickness of gear vs thickness of teeth
o Worldedit commands with radius.
Steps:

This is an easy guide if you have some Minecraft building experience. Depending on the size of the gear you are looking to make, it will vary the completion time in making one. So let’s begin our adventure together!

Recommended programs:
o Minecraft - (any version)
- If you didn’t know already you need Minecraft downloaded
o Paint
- Most computers come with the paint program, similar programs my apply.
o WorldEdit – (version compatible with your Minecraft)
- “WE” is very helpful when it comes to large scale projects. Depending on the size of your gear you may not want to do it by hand. (totally up to you)
Technical overview:
-These are some things to keep in mind when working between paint and worldedit in relation to Minecraft.
o Circles in paint vs Worldedit
- Cutting into your gear will not look identical to the pixels in paint.
o Using worldedit command: //cyl stone 22
- Will make a circle have a diameter of 45 not 44.
o Thickness of gear vs thickness of teeth
- You want them to be relatively even. Most measurements are eyeballed.
o Worldedit commands with radius.
- Using Worldedit commands will place blocks relative to one block above the one you are standing on so be aware when standing on the center.
Steps:
- Begin by deciding how big you actually want your gear to be. The gear I will be making is 55 in diameter. So in Minecraft standing at the purple square type //cyl stone 27.
- Next we need to decide how thick we want the teeth to be. In this one the teeth will be four blocks in thickness. For this you need to place four red blocks at all the poles of the circle relative to the middle. Then standing at the purple block type //hcyl stone 31.
- Making the teeth shape to copy to your Minecraft game. To do this first you need to find a size for your five point star that fits your circles. 77x77 fits well with the thickness we have in step 2. Begin by placing the star as centered and symmetrical as you can eye balling it. Next take another star 77x77 and rotate it by 180 degrees. You want to place your second one over the other star so that it connects symmetry at the top and sides, it will form a ten point star when this step is finished.
- Some of you are probably thinking that step 3 is really confusing, well this step will help you realize that it only looks confusing. Next we will remove the parts of the outer circle (black) that are not inside the stars, as well as the stars points (orange) that are not in the tooth’s profile. Once finished you can see the tooth’s shape on the circle.
- Copy the orange template onto your Minecraft circle. Once you finish that, fill in the missing pieces of stone to make the teeth.
- Lastly delete the orange outline. Then using the copy tool of Worldedit copy the entire stone gear, and standing on the center copy the selection with //copy, jump up one block and //paste. Repeat to make the thickness of the gear. Hollow it to your desire.
(Keep in mind pixels can change the look, so larger gears will look better than smaller ones)
Implementation:
- This tutorial shows you how to make horizontal gears, however there are two ways to make them vertical. One do it by hand and follow the paint pictures. Two Use MCedit to flip it.
- Another way to use gears in Minecraft is by taking advantage of the thickness of your gear. Say you make it 5 blocks thick; if you keep it hollow there is room for Redstone wiring inside.

- Please feel free to comment on ways you might use gears in Minecraft.
- I’d appreciate the diamonds for my efforts on my first tutorial ;)
