Before you read: Basically, these are suggestions for every player should follow. If done, multiplayer servers should be more enjoyable and friendlier! Also, this is my first blog, so please comment with constructivecriticism. Thanks!
Number One
Judge by content of personality, not by appearance or acts.
Often, I see people criticizing new or sometimes, very experienced users of Minecraft for using the default ("Steve") skin. Just because they use a "noobish" skin does not mean that the player behind the skin is also a "noob" or is new to the game. And even if the player is new to Minecraft, that does notmean you should treat the player differently than any other player. You should still respect them and if they want them, give them tips on playing. "Do onto others as you would like them to do onto you." -The Golden Rule
Number Two
Follow the server rules.
All of the time, I constantly see rule breakers on servers with big and small communities. This can make players worry about their buildings being griefed, items being stolen, or hack attacks, and so on. If you're someone who breaks server rules, think about all of the players you're making feel unsafe on the server. The best way to make players feel safe and happy is to follow the server rules!
Number Three
Ops/Admins: Do your job, and don't abuse your powers.
On my primary server, I constantly see operators/admins slacking off and not preforming their duties and using their powers to benefit themselves, such as spawning items in, banning/kicking for false reasons, or simply not doing their jobs at all. This can also make players feel uneasy or vulnerable to rule breakers. Do not pester players by flying around them or whatnot.
Number Four
Welcome players.
Should you be on a server, and a new player joins, you should always greet them to the server. If you do, the player will feel welcomed and that the server is friendly and accepts anyone. Even if a regular player to the server joins, you should always greet him/her, too. They will feel welcomed logically.
Number Five
Don't show off.
By this, I mean to not brag about how rich you are in the server, how awesome your skin, shelter, or whatever is, and so on. Especially don't offer someone something, and not give it to him/her. Basically, don't brag. Enough said.
Number Six
Respect Age/Sexuality/Race/Etc.
I have not once been on a server where someone did nottease someone because of their age, sexuality, race, religious beliefs, and so on. Teasing someone because you're older than them is just idiotic. Remember, you were once their age once, too. How would you like it if someone made fun of you for being younger than them? Also, if you know there is someone young, do not speak of explicit things, such as sex, swearing, etc.Not great. I used to constantly pester this one guy because of his sexuality. About a month later, he left the server because of me. I realized I was being a total nuisance and making him feel uncomfortable. Unfortunately, I lost contact with him so I could never apologize. Hating or treating someone different just because they came from a different country than you, have a different skin color than you, or have a funny accent is just cruel. You should always respect their difference and accept them for who they are. Again, remember the Golden Rule. But should you happen to insult or tease someone for difference, you should apologize right away. If you don't, it may haunt you for a while. I still feel guilt for chasing the player away from the server, and it's been about a year now.
Number Seven
Donate to the less fortunate.
If you see players that aren't as lucky as you at, for example, mining, be generous and give them a diamond or two. I know this sounds a bit far-fetched, but you'd be surprised how happy they'll be...Unless they're in a bad mood or something. Letting players use your, for example, anvil also will please them. Maybe they don't have enough iron to make their own, and their pickaxe is about to break or something, just as an example. Sometimes, players like to survive on their own, and won't accept donations. If that is the case, do not pester them by trying to forcethem to accept the donation.
Number Eight
Don't abuse Caps Lock
For me, nothing is more annoying in the chat when a player abuses Caps Lock, making most or entire of their message in the chat completly capitalized. LIKE THIS, FOR EXAMPLE. It may just be me, but it is soannoying in my opinion. However, if capital letters are in usernames, such as mine, L4P15M1N3R, it would look awful to exchange capital letters with lower-case letters. Don't believe me? Here: l4p15m1n3r...But basically, only use capital letters when grammatically required.
Number Nine
Do not grief.
I know this one may seem a bit silly, but nothing sinks your heart to log onto a server to see that your shelter or house has been griefed. To see your home that you spent so much time on be deprived and obliterated. Simply enough, don't grief.
