It seems that there are a lot of servers out there. When I say a lot, I mean a LOT! Servers here, servers there, servers of any and all types, shapes and sizes. Multi-world, grief, PVP, HungerGames, so many to choose from. Some people may believe that this is a good thing, that many servers means more diversity and more choices for the user. And, in a way, they are right. But, is the amount of servers also killing off the amount of choices?
As a server owner, and manager of a whole community that now counts a total of 3 servers, I know how hard it can be to start up. In fact, it seems it's almost impossible to get a server well known enough to get enough donations or players for it to be worth running. If there's no celebrity's name attached to it, or it doesn't boast the newest game style for Minecraft, it's almost doomed to failure! Even if the server is a good place, where the staff are kind and helpful, it will still die!
Why? Why does this happen?
As more and more people join Minecraft, they look for servers to play on. The first ones they'll see are the biggest and the most famous, not necessarily the best or the most fun. Most people will not look past page 1 or 2 of any given server list, and some may not even look past the top 10. With PMC's "Bump Submission" choice, this seems to go away. And, it does, for about 10 minutes before enough people have bumped THEIR servers back to the top. And other websites don't even have that feature! This creates a growing Minecraft community that floods mainly to the big and well-known servers, and can even suck existing players out of the smaller servers trying to get better and better known.
With server sites noticing things like this, each is taking their security into different ways. Some sites are requiring you to get X amounts of votes per month/week/XDays, others are making server settings (Such as online mode) blacklisted. Some require you to get so many hits per time limit, or that you can provide a 95% or higher uptime. These help a little bit with junk servers, but some new servers have issues doing the "Voting" and "Hits" ones, which can cause perfectly good but unknown servers some serious trouble.
If some server advertising sites were to take the popular ones and stuff them away for say, a month, and allow servers with lower views/votes/etc. some time to be on the top, maybe the community could see a bit of an expansion in the way of more servers and actually having to fight more for users. Always remember: more popular doesn't necessarily mean BETTER.
This could eventually lead to the death of new Minecraft ideas, and possibly the death of Minecraft itself. Of course, this is just one person's opinion, I'd be happy to read yours and discuss it in the comments down below.
