So by now you all folks jumped on the bandwagon and are looking to run servers and make a profit of 'em. Well I just wanted to show you some pointers so that you can properly run / maintain a server.

1. Staff <= IS Everything
Your staff / team / bros / etc. makes or breaks a server. All to often I walk into a 1000 slot server that runs on 16 Gigs and see it tearing apart itself to shreds. Why? The absence of staff. Your staff need to professional and dedicated to your server. Think of them as policemen, there are less likely to be hackers if you have staff on 24/7. Luckily in my case I have trusted friends in both U.S., Asia, and Europe and as result we have admins for each major timezone. Furthermore, each admin has his/her own team to run the server and as a result we have 24/7 coverage. But this is hard. I know, even awesome servers like Super-Earth have trouble doing this cause of trust issues and what not.

2. Community
The community you build will be the representatives of your server. If you walk into a server and 10 ppl call NOOBZ! That server is doomed to fail. You need to build a helpful and friendly community. Once again this is easier said then done but here's a quick tip. YOU be helpful and nice to new members. You set a precedent for other players to follow.

3. Server Specs
Some of you believe that server specs are everything for a successful server. They are not. What use is a 200 slot server if 2 members are online? And people don't join servers because they have awesome specs. They join because of staff and community. For all the new people out there who want to start servers I would suggest that the start off with a 30 slot server and slowly expand.

This was New Liberty's Model for Expansion
- Opening Week (30 Slot Server)
- By the 15th day of opening we reached server highs of 23ish people.
- Third Week: Started plans for (64 Slot Server)
- Fourth Week: Got 64 Slot Server
- Middle of Fourth Week: 50ish Server High
- Fifth Week: Purchased 120+ Slot Server

^This won't be true for most of you, no hurt intended but you must realize a pattern. We grow our server according to demand. We always make plans to upgrade if the slots remaining is less than 10. So monitor your growth!

BUT WHERE DO I GET MY SERVER!!
^ Says the noob. I cant explicitly say which one I use (that would be advertising) but just google up Top 10 Minecraft Host Providers and pick your cream of the crop!

But DO NOT get Servercraft! <= No pun intended, we lost 50 dollars on that server provider.

4. Wait I want to make MONEYZ!
Wrong, your primary goal should always to please your server community. Be helpful and get them hooked on your server. Ban those spammers and xrayers! After people are happy with your server, make them happier by doing surveys and tweaking your server to please them. Then they will thank you by donating.

5. Any Questions / Criticisms?
Just comment and I will try to dish out my knowledge and love to discuss with you CRITICS (I know you are there!)

Very good, I liked that you mentioned super-earh a server which I used to play on and be part of the staff. Anyway I liked the fact that staff have individual teams.

I am a pro at servers, and I am looking into getting a server box, What kind of box you recommend and control panel. I am looking at mable a 150 slot server with 32 gigs of DDR3 ram.

ok so let me get this straight. if i was to buy a server (i mean a physical server box, not a monthly payment to an internet sight) do i need any software to run the server/ operate my minecraft server?

Yes. You need to set up the software which is simply referred to minecraft server .jar. However, I strongly suggest that you shouldn't buy your own server. You will never get the high-priority internet connection unless you own a data server. As a result there WILL be frequent lags. Furthermore, there is a lot of ways this venture can go wrong even if you are a seasoned pro (which sadly you are not) <= I am being frank here.

I therefore strongly suggest to check out Beastnode as a server hoster. They are the cheapest and most reliable.

This is my review of it if you want to know more about Beastnode.

and there is still another question to answer:
If you make a server with Bukkit, does it cost money?

All hosts arent free, you can have a bukkit server or a vanilla one.. It is not what change the price.. But making a Bukkit server is free as well as a vanilla one.. But if you want a good host, you gotta pay for it.

I don't think so, maybe you would get the first month free, but not a whole year (For exemple).

I'm a Mod on a server and sometimes I go on other servers and see their staff and sometimes I'm just like WOW, they aren't staff at all, Thank god I found a good owner still cares about his server population no matter what their status in-game and is a nice and epic owner. Not saying every other owner is bad, I'm sure theres plenty of owners or people who are great at being helpful and making Minecraft an epic game.

Love the policeman part, there is currently an issue with some griefs on the server I play on and me and an admin were like Detectives XD We had theorys, chatlogs to have evidence and when I saw this, it was such a coincidence =D Sweet tips, hope to see more and subscribed =)

Well as I said you can have 1300 slots server but that matters extremely little if you only get 10 players.

what i am saying is that the number of slots is NOT important until you go big. Sad to say but at first you are going to only have around 5 users at launch. Then step it up from there.

Another thing that helps to make a server better is having a website for it. If you have a website then if someone is banned for something they did not do, then they have a chance to fight it instead of the decision being final no matter what. You'd be surprised how often it happens.

^Once again I agree. I forgot to point it out but you do need a website. Sadly your website isn't really needed, but get one nonetheless. Why? Professionalism. Any self-respecting server must demonstrate professionalism and having a website is one of the ways to do so.

added tip: use craftbukkit, and and anti griefing plugins, also, possibly make a "guest" user, and make that person apply a build or resume, this ensures that they acually want to be a part of the comunity, and not just screw around

I HATE servercraft. They ripped me off too! There was a problem with people joining, so I reset my server, and BAM, every file was gone. and they wont let you get them back, either!
they are d!cks who just rip you off. NOT ADVERTISING, but I personally Like Beastnode.
Thanks for the GREAT blog, it is goof for those "NOOBZ" who are so clueless.

P.S.
Finding a trustworthy Staff is the HARDEST thing to do. I swear, it's HARD.

Haha I understand perfectly about you and servercraft. You know I paid 20 dollars for a server and didn't even get a server made? They are a scam.

Beastnode I cough cough use it also <= Not Advertising to any Snooping Mods XD

For your staff I suggest you don't recruit it from PMC although i love the community there are far too many noobs who just want to be a OP without even knowing what OP means. And recruit your staff while you are building your server that way they dedicate their time to making Spawn cities and whatnot and from then on they will be loyal to you since they want their work to continue to survive if you get what I mean.

But to get them to actually WANT to do the work and help make the server Better than it already is. Most of the time they apply for the POWER to be able to BAN-HAMAH, Op, and Kick with No Punishment for Being a total Ass. They feel that they can be SOO Big and tough Because they can ban a player for Not knowing who The name "Markus Persson" (Notch) Or the Player said Something to Offend the DoucheBag Staff. But I don't necessarily Suggest that you give it to your Close friends, who you trust, But have NO IDEA How to run a server.

True but if you have close friends IN Minecraft then they should be quite proficient at it. All our staff have played minecraft for over 1 year which is pretty seasoned.

They may know about Minecraft and know how to play it, But what about Hands-On Experience With Situations? My BEST Friend Plays Minecraft, and has for 7 Months as well, But I would NEVER Hire Him to Help Run the server. e knows what to do, But he Can't handle situations Like... "Someone Griefed my house, Please Come fix it!" Or spam, or lag, or building. He cannot Handle these things because he has NO experience with it. Thats what I mean is, They May Know how to play Minecraft, and May Be good at it, But they need to know how to handle Certain Unexpected situations. That's One of my Reasons who it is SO HARD to find Good, Mature, Loyal staff.

hey, I am planning too make a industrialcraft/buildcraft server, me and my two brothers have our payment plan and our server host all sorted out but we are a bit unsure about a couple of things for when we go public.
1. Acquiring staff, i just feel it would be hard to gain that kind of trust from people and getting those people with the correct amount of maturity for the job !
2. keeping people on the server, we don't want to have a server that people just come on for a day and leave.
3. and last but not least griefing, having server with mods on it means we cant have pluggins right ? meaning we cant have logblock or protections.

1. Get staff from people you trust. If you have a friend in minecraft that you played with a long time, ask them out! Don't recruit from forums as they are bunch of strangers you never got to know.

2. Make your community welcome and addicting by rewarding users who play the most. However, don't reward the long-time users too much or your noob population will feel left out and give up playing on your server because they will never be able to catch up.

3. I am not sure about this but you will have to definitely have 247 Staff if you want this server to become a reality without griefers destroying it.
