Introduction:
After playing for several days in my Frozen Hell world, it felt really bad that I spent 44 in-game days with building my undead-free base just to realize I'm stuck on level 10 with no experience and no resources thus I made Learn From Your Deeds! data pack to patch the missing experience issue by adding other ways to grind XP. Now I made this data pack to patch the missing resources issue by allowing the player to reverse craft items, thus disassembling items that are no longer needed or their materials are better off used other ways. This data pack adds over 600+ vanilla friendly recipes to the game, without pretty much adding any recipes. What a paradox, right? Let's see how it works.

Features:
  • Items that were previously craftable such as enchanted golden apple, horse armors and the likes are available to craft again
  • Most materials are useable in blast furnace for example sand
  • If I'm correct the vast majority of items that would be salvageable in real life can be disassembled at the crafting table, smelted in furnaces or cut in the stone cutter
  • Most of the recipes are balanced and you can get the exact amount of materials back by salvaging the item
  • If an item is made of several different materials you can experiment by trying at the crafting table, furnace, blast furnace, stonecutter and blacksmith table then next time remembering the recipe choose the one you find most useful

And much more! Try out and experiment yourself. If you find anything that seems to be off or missing, feel free to contact me here in comments, on my Telegram account or in private : ) Enjoy.

The data pack was created with the help of thedestruc7i0n's handy tool and the few of the existing blasting elements used from buhpoi's Blast Furnace-Klin data pack. Big thanks goes to both of them!

Update #5 : by SirMephistoPheles666 12/16/2021 4:15:40 pmDec 16th, 2021

  • Updated so iron and gold stuff now smelt into 1 bar of their respective ingot, instead of nugget. Seems only fair.

If implemented in vanilla, I think that
  • It should only be available after you defeat the Enderdragon.
  • The GUI should be like a crafting table, but inverted. So you put a item on it and the materials appear on the table's grid.
  • Damaged items can't be put on it, so you'll need to fix them before getting the materials back.
  • To uncraft items, you'll need to sacrifice a quantity of another item(s). These could be either "trashy" ones like dirt, or valuable ones like diamonds, but this should vary according to the item's rarity.
  • There might be some items that can't be used on the salvage table, like Nether Wart blocks or magma blocks, for example. Additionally, items that are already uncraftable in other ways can't be put on it.

If such a feature was added in vanilla I'm sure I'd still use data packs to bypass some features for I don't understand why and how could scrapping/salvaging items be related/connected to the ender dragon. That just makes no sense for me at least. I can agree with your GUI idea. With damaged items I'd implement a threshold for how many resources could the player get pack. For example above 90% of a tool like diamond pickaxe the player could get back 3 diamonds, between 60-89% percent only 2 and under 59% only one. I'd not use an universal un-crafting method for some blocks like stairs, slabs, stones and some hard items should be only be salvageable in specific stations like in the stonecutter or the blast furnace for minerals, for woods either the stonecutter or crafting table and so on. But instead of sacrificing useless items I'd add new tools like salvaging kit or salvaging tools that are limited in durability and can be used to disassemble items for a number of times then you would need to craft another. There are salvaging options that could be used to exploit some game features, like you mentioned nether wart block for example. I would deal with it by simply implementing a different block for crimson forest fungi for it feels like a cheesy move from mojang to use an already existing block for a new fauna item such as crimson mushrooms. Also nether wart and crimson fungi are two completely different species. It makes no sense for crimson fungi to be made of nether wart. My other idea would be that some blocks like nether wart that can be crafted but not salvaged should contain an NBT data for player created. The game would know which nether wart or magma blocks has been created by the player from nether wart or magma cream and you should only be able to salvage those you've made but not found in the wild. This would prevent the player from exploiting nether wart and magma blocks so they couldn't get infinite nether warts and magma cream.

well, the idea of it being available after you defeat the Enderdragon is that you would need to explore the outer islands to either found the salvage table on a place like End cities, or a specific material to craft it. also, I think that NBT data for player made blocks would be really impractical to implement.

Yeah. Makes sense. Especially the nbt data but there are lot of things about Minecraft that are impractical. I just had no better idea suddenly. But I can support an idea in which there are salvage recipes and tools hidden in the end so you'd need to fly around with elytra and find all the recipes so you can disassemble most of your items/blocks that you no longer require in that from. But that'd need some serious revamp in the end. A huge end update so you wouldn't just fly from city to city, run in, run out, 30 minute adventure but explore all sorts of structures with traps, dangers, loot, mobs etc.

I didn't mean "finding recipes", I meant finding the salvage table, or the material used to craft it, in End cities

I know. I reflected with my own idea on the topic. I can imagine both. The table being hidden in the end as well as recipes for each salvaging option.

Me too. It'd be a great way to gather materials and indeed, in case you accidentally crafted something you didn't want this could be a life saver. More precisely a resource saver.

Also, Mojang should add salvagers, which gives you the ingredients of a crafted item, eg.
Diamond Pickaxe ---> 3 sticks, 3 diamonds

Yeah. It'd be great. Also I'd suggest Mojang to let only a certain part be salvaged depending on durability. If more than 99% of the item is useable you'd be able to get all materials back. If it's between 33-66% then only 2/3 of them. And if the durability is under 33% only 1/3 of them.
