Starlich Hiveship
That fear you feel - that creeping dread as we move deeper into the void? You can thank the Starlichs for that, lad. Them and their damn hiveships. -Captain Jacob Smith, two months before Explorer disappears
Of all the many terrors lurking in the depths of unknown space, few can inspire the same insidious and ever present dread as Starlich hiveships. They lie in wait, shrouded in darkness, for an opportunity to drain unsuspecting vessels of their energy… and their crews.
The Starlich hiveship is the perfect ambush predator, using its speed and stealth to overwhelm, disable, and consume its prey before they are able to react. The massive insect-like wings mounted on the hiveship’s dorsal surface act as radiators, dissipating built-up heat passively at a rate slow enough to be effectively invisible to other ships until they are within its reach. When paired with a hull built of stealth materials, hiveships are so elusive few individuals, dead or alive, could even describe one’s appearance.
Hiveships have only two fixed energy cannons mounted at their bows for direct combat, and the massive energy drain required for even a single volley - antithetical to the very nature of hiveships, which are intended to hoard even the most meager quantities of precious sun energy - as well as their limited range prohibits their use in all but the most desperate situations. The true danger hiveships pose are through their drone swarms, which can be deployed and attacking potential prey in an instant. Piloted remotely by a Lich and its thralls via a powerful lodestone, hiveship drone swarms attack with an eerie precision and degree of coordination that is unmatched. Leech drones stab themselves into prey, siphoning energy from a ship to be returned to the hiveship. Once its prey has been subdued, the hiveship itself will grapple its drifting hull and pierce it directly with a large ventral spire to drain what remains of its prey’s energy. As soon as this is done, the hiveship removes itself and unleashes a second swarm of drones into the corpse. Capture drones abduct living crewmembers, for whom terrible fates await at the hands of the Lich. Even the dead are not spared, their bodies dragged back to the hiveship impaled on piercer drones. Often, when the hiveship lacks space for any more living prisoners, survivors will meet their end in a similar position.
During past wars between Starlichs, vast swarms of hiveships would tear each other apart and drain the corpses dry, accumulating so much power they glow with the energy of thousands of their ilk. These few survivors roam the depths of space, flaring their radiators blindingly bright to lure young and arrogant hiveships in feeding frenzies to their death. Countless more hiveships lie dead in the dark, their empty hulls drifting silently, forever forgotten.

Hiveship Maianete
Few hiveships, except perhaps the immortal Nestvira and ancient Zesphadi, are as well known by the creatures of the night as the Maianete. It was first home to the mysterious Lich Amalthea, a private scholar whose incredible collection of tomes and deep understanding of the arcane was sought after by those of every race. Perhaps for this reason, Amalthea kept a small, close circle of confidants, perfectly content to stay with her books and, eventually, a single apprentice, Cyranus. Before Amalthea perished, she bequeathed Maianete to Cyranus, imploring him only to take good care of the vessel and ensure her most insidious and ancient works were hidden from all for eternity.
Under Cyranus, Maianete would gain even more renown among the more elite and sophisticated circles of the sunless. Unlike Amalthea, Cyranus was outgoing and always eager to share knowledge. Although he followed his master’s last wishes, he would renovate much of Maianete’s interior to accommodate lodging and entertainment for fellow scholars of the night. Where most hiveships are wretched hulks filled with blood and death, Cyranus installed opulent living quarters, bathrooms, dining areas, a ritual room, and even an entire theater. Here, Cyranus and his assistants put on shows for his guests that, while indescribably horrifying to humans, were so beloved by his ilk that seats were among the most sought after items in the system.
