The Foundry is where we smelt most of our bulk items. We have a couple versions (one version has smoking chimneys!). The goal was to have a foundry that was practical to build in SMP, efficient use of fuel, lossless with no items stranded in hoppers or waiting minecarts.
Once we worked out the furnace array design, we wanted a suitable building to house everything and blend into our growing city of Centerville. I wanted an early to mid 20th century looking building with lots of smoke stacks. I kind of had the Battersea Power plant (from the Pink Floyd Animals cover) in the back of my mind. I knew the scale was too small to look authentic, so I came up with this design instead. The only thing missing is the flying pig... anyone got one to contribute? The flying pig is here! we will include it in the new schematic on the next update.
The heart of the system is the furnace array. The furnaces and hoppers are a no-brainer, but I needed a good loading system that could measure out the items and could be scaled to any size. I have tested the design to 64 furnaces, but found 32 furnaces to give the best performance and timings. Quite honestly, its fast enough
We used a timed loader circuit by youtuber and master of minecart magic CobblestoneAndDirt (here's his video). His design intentionally had only the functions needed for his application, in a retrieval system where the minecarts do NOT rest in the bay. In the furnace array, they must wait for cargo, hence the need to revise. I also added the ability to start the system by simply using it. Place items in the items chest or the fuel chest and the corresponding minecart is launched. The carts will continue to run until there are no more items to deliver to the furnaces. I am satisfied with the design now.
The output can be collected in a chest, a minecart loader, or as in our case here: in a water transport system (A separate project) that delivers the output very rapidly to the input of the BFMC Wharehouse system for sorting and storage. Design goals met! a Mostly automatic smelting system!

(Practical wins out over pure wow factor)

No. It's not a plane, nor bird, nor even a frog. It's just little old... Wait a minute! It's a flying Pig over the Foundry!
Thanks to P983e7 for a mini-version of his famous Pig House. In homage to the Animals album cover from Pink Floyd. We will include it in the next update. Hope you like it...
