The Loop - Chicago Project

Hello everyone, the project is now done with it's second update! After about 10/11 months of very on and off work (trust me, I took a few very long breaks), we've gotten another 5 blocks completed. Expect the next update to come out much quicker, I promise :). After I finish the Loop itself, I plan on extending the western and northern edges 1-2 blocks outside to get the river front, and eventually get to the other bank. On the eastern edge, I will also be extending 1 block east to get the main skyline, and also to get Millennium and Grant Park. Although this will take lots of time and effort, I plan on doing that in a timely manner. Even though this project was always something I have dreamed of doing myself, I could not have been able to without help from these 4 people:

NJDaeger
: The server host, render-maker, the person who helps me with roads, and is very skillful with curves. An essential person to this project.

56515
: A guy that helps with many buildings and helps with other minimal things, along with always reminding me that we're on a schedule and to focus on builds.

Mech265: The guy that helped with the trains themselves, and also some minor detailing in the city. Also taught me the general 20th Century style that is one of the staples of Chicago itself.

- Check out these peoples' profiles, you will not regret it! -

What is the Loop?
The Loop has two different meanings in Chicago; city transit and the neighborhood itself.

In Neighborhood Terms..

The Loop is one of the most densely populated neighborhoods in Chicago, Illinois. It is also the main business district and commercial core of the city. Its borders are Roosevelt Road on the south, the Chicago River on the west and north, and Lake Michigan on the east.

In City Transit Terms...

The Loop (historically Union Loop) is the 1.79-mile (2.88 km) long circuit of elevated railroad that forms the hub of the Chicago "L" system in Chicago, Illinois. As of 2012, the branch has served 74,651 passengers every weekday. The Loop is so named because the railroad loops around a rectangle formed by Lake Street on the north side, Wabash Avenue on the east side, Van Buren Street on the south side, and Wells Street on the west side.

* * * * * * * * * *
Notice how each definition has a different explanation on what the borders of the "Loop" are.

How did the Loop get its name?
Numerous accounts assert that the use of this term predates the elevated railroad, deriving from the multiple cable car turntables, or loops, that terminated in the district, and especially those of two lines that shared a loop, constructed in 1882, bounded by Madison, Wabash, State, and Lake. However, transportation historian Bruce Moffat has concluded that "The Loop" was not used as a proper noun until after Charles Yerkes' (considered one of the main creators of what is now Chicago's mass-transit system) construction of the elevated train line.

Why did I start this project?

This project has been something I wanted to do since the day I started building in Minecraft. First, let me tell you a story. When I was about 7 years old, my dad asked me if I would like to accompany him to downtown to visit his old colleagues at the Board of Trade, which is at the end of LaSalle street. We got on the CTA (Chicago Transit Authority), and when we crossed the Chicago River over the Wells Street Bridge, I was awestruck. The utter size of the buildings was mesmerizing, and the fact that every street looked like a canyon amazed me. Everywhere I looked, I saw building after building. We hopped off the train, and headed down the street, eventually hitting LaSalle Street. Looking west, I saw the towering Chicago Board of Trade building. The art-deco superstructure was once the tallest in Chicago. We went in, enjoyed the company Even then, after the day that my father first took me into downtown Chicago, I always admire the unique styles and variety of buildings.

Update 2.5 : 01/20/2018 2:52:41 amJan 20th

Check out this new review/reaction video of the map by one of our own builders, Bluecolty! Subscribe to his channel while you're at it! Anyway, this is just a little note to inform everyone the progress of the current update. The original plan was to release 5 blocks for the next update. However, due to the speed of our builders, we are already about done with it! We plan to add an additional 3 blocks to make the update larger, and then to release the map at a later date (won't be long from now!). I'm sure you'd rather see a larger map with better renders than just a few new blocks with rushed renders. Be sure to watch the page for more updates with the project!

Very nice. Part of our project involves building Chicago. I'm not sure we would even try to get it to this level of accuracy. Have a diamond!

They still haven't built outside of The Loop yet, which is what the project is named after. But that doesn't mean they won't get there eventually.
Amazing, this has always been on my bucket list. I'm a Chicago native and DePaul Alum! I'm super excited to visit the DePaul CDM building at Jackson/Wells. You should throw a huge party when you finish and host the map on a public server for a week. Minecraftpalooza at grant park? Oh the ideas

Oh that'd be great, I'd love that. Also a Chicago native and commute in and out of the loop every day for school. Every day it changes, so I might even need to update it soon! An example of this is when the Marquee at Block 37 was built. We didn't have google street view for it, so it got much harder, had to take pictures irl to send to the builder haha. NJDaeger runs the server for us, so maybe an open server when we're done building! Thank you for the feedback btw, we really appreciate it.

Wait, I think I might've just found the problem... You're playing in 1.7.10... This is a 1.11 map :P something probably changed with the world format, so if you want to play on this map, I recommend trying 1.11 and seeing if it works then! If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask! :)

I am sure its possible ;) I very like the old looking buildings and towers, great work!
If you want to build complete interiors with electric lighting to every building, you may have a heavy problem:
You need a fast computer, otherwise you have a laggy city. Thats what I know now.
If I can travel back in time, I will choose glowstone.
