My aim with GearSmith is to provide you more items to play with while keeping the vanilla color pallete and the feel of the base game. I will continue to expand the pack indefinitely, adding more items and tweaking textures. The pack uses Optifine's Custom Item Textures feature to
allow you to apply custom skins to items and armor by changing their display name. If your new to this pack, please read all the instructions below, as there are steps you must take to make it function correctly.
IMPORTANT: GearSmith is a resource pack, not a mod. If you’re having issues using it alongside other
mods, it’s likely due to a conflict with Optifine, not GearSmith. I can’t fix those sorts of issues. You can
report mod conflicts on Optifine’s issue tracker here:
https://github.com/sp614x/optifine/issues
This google doc is a crafting guide that show the steps necessary to create the items in the pack. The guide is updated upon release of new content.
GearSmith Crafting Guide
Here is a general guide for setting up GearSmith. This can also apply to other Optifine-dependent resource packs.
Because Optifine is required, this pack will only work on Java Edition. It is currently impossible to port it over to Windows 10 Edition or Pocket Edition.
Downloading and Installing
Installing GearSmith is easy! Simply click the download/files button on this page, save it anywhere and then copy it into your resource packs folder like any other resource pack.
Next, you need to install the correct version of Optifine for the version of Minecraft you’re using. You can download it from www.optifine.net
Click “Downloads” and click on the most recent version for the version of Minecraft you’re using. You may be shown an ad window before being taken to the download link. Just wait 5-10 seconds for the timer to run out and then click “Skip Ad” in the top right corner of the screen.
If you’re using Optifine alongside Forge, you’ll need to check the individual changelogs beside each link to make sure you get the one that is compatible with your version of forge. This may not always
be the most recent link, so check the versions carefully.
You’ll be prompted to download a .jar file and save it somewhere. If the file you saved is not a .jar, you will need to update java on your pc before it will work. Before running the .jar file, make sure you’ve run Minecraft at least once on the version you wish to use Optifine on. Double click the .jar file and click “Install.”
If you’re using Forge, simply copy the .jar file into your mods folder.
If the .jar file won’t open upon double clicking, try right clicking the file and select Open With > Java(TM) Platform SE Binary
You’re done! Open up the launcher and choose the Optifine Profile you just created. Then load the resource pack.
Crafting Items
Since this is just a resource pack, there are no conventional crafting recipes. Instead Optifine detects when an item is renamed on an anvil and, depending on what the name is, the texture will change. Names for each item are listed in the crafting guide.
Effects & Settings
I've added animations and glow effects to some of the items as well. To see all of these things you will need to turn on some of Optifine's video settings. Go to the main menu, then options, then video settings…
Under Animations…
turn on terrain animated
turn on textures animated
Under Quality…
turn on custom items
turn on emissive texture
Server Use
GearSmith can be used on servers and multiplayer worlds as well! The custom textures are only clientside, so your worlds remain totally vanilla. The downside to this however is that no one else will be able to see the custom textures unless they also have the resource pack and Optifine installed on their end.
If you’re a server owner, you can upload the resource pack to a file hosting service such as dropbox and use the download link to implement it as a server resource pack. You’ll still need to prompt your players to download and install Optifine though.
Troubleshooting
There are a number of reasons why GearSmith may not be working properly for you. The following aren’t guaranteed solutions, but they should help in most situations.
* Make sure you’ve selected the correct profile.
* Make sure you’re using the most recent version of Optifine for your version of
Minecraft.
* Make sure the version of the pack you’re using is compatible.
* Make sure GearSmith is near the top of your resource packs list.
* Make sure Custom Item Textures is enabled in your settings. (Options > Video Settings > Quality > Custom Items: ON)
* Check the Minecraft Game Output window for any errors with Optifine. You may have a mod conflict. (I can’t fix these. Post about them on Optifine’s Issue Tracker.)

Ive noticed gearsmith/gearplus is the ONLY cit I ran into that has not worked for me on resewn/fabric. Could I be doing something wrong possibly?
Im a big fan of the armors youve made and would be very happy to be able to use them on a server my friend is making. We will leave the credits in the description of all armor pieces and also where we will display them. I would like to know if you allow us to use it on our server. Anyway, thanks in advance.
