I'm sure everyone remembers how they removed the option to downvote a submission on this glorious website known as Planet Minecraft. However, it was only recently that I realized how important a user's ability to downvote things is.
So first of all, why did they remove the downvote? Cyprezz discussed it a very long time ago in a blog.
Here be.
Trolls had the ability to ballz-up someone's submission by banding together and bombarding the submission with the crap-cannon. Let's say someone got 100 upvotes and 107 downvotes. It would show up as -7. Is this subtractive consensus really what should represent the hard work or merit of the uploader?
NO!
So that's why they got rid of it.
However, I really hate
(And I mean REALLY hate)
When crap submissions show up on the reel, or when something that is clearly stolen or lacking pictures goes unnoticed. The moderators can't always get to every single thing out there. I can't even say for sure how many things on PMC had gotten 5,000 views and only 3 diamonds. What does it mean when this happens? It means that people viewed it out of curiosity initially, but so desperately wished to take their view back after realizing that the member was selling snake-oil. I'm sure everyone remembers the Grand Theft Auto mod. Oh wait, it never really existed.
How should PMC remedy this?
Well, clearly the old system was screwed multiple times up and over, since the number of up votes has the number of downvotes subtracted from it, giving an invalid perspective of the submission.
As you can see in the picture I so seamlessly conceptualized and pasted together, they could make it so that the submissions have two different counters. This would work because the number of people who liked it is still represented as it is, and same for the number of dislikes. And if there is a submission with 5 k views, maybe they would make it so that if the number of downvotes is vastly greater than the number of upvotes the submission won't get put on the reel.
The old system was screwed up, the current system is screwed up, but I can't see anything wrong with this one. Any thoughts or objections?
TL;DR version:
They should bring back the downvote option, but just make it a separate counter so that the upvote count is unaffected by it. They should do this because there is too much crap getting lots of views that goes unnoticed, and there needs to be a true reflection of what people think of something.
