Chapter 1:
I feel like I'm not doing everything I can with my life. I wake up, go to work, go home, then to bed. Same old, same old. I'm not sure if I want it to change. I don't know. One thing I do know is I don't want it to go back to how it used to be. Now, my life is simple...peaceful, but sometimes I feel like I have to do...more. Most of the time I want the peacefulness, but sometimes my relief is in the rage.
I feel so angry at nothing. I guess it's nothing. It has to be nothing...right? I can't exactly remember when it started; when it seeped into my thoughts, but I do remember when it first took over.
I can't think straight. This is confusing and it's giving me a headache just sitting here getting my thoughts together. Let me start where it hurts the least. I guess it was the beginning.
It's still blurry. It ws 1998, I think, winter. I was a soldier fighting a war the government didn't want anyone to know about. We were losing and conditions were just getting worse.
The second we reached the AO they pounced on us. These things used the dense forest around and guerrila tactics to pick us off one by one while it was still dark. This was before launching a full scale attack on our severely weakened numbers. The machines came from the east rising with the bright sun.
I was holed up in a small two story building waiting for something to happen. From what I could see, nearly all of the platoon had been decimated. Occasionally, I would hear the sickening sound of guns going off as they found some of my friends in hiding. It was only a matter of time before they found me too. Rather, before they found us.
My best friend was crouched next to me, squeezed under a wooden desk. By some miracle, he made it out of the ambush too. I don't know I guess it was a genetics thing. I started to peek up and check if anyone else was around, but my brother sharply pulled me to the ground. He put a finger to his lips and pointed towards the office door.
Slowly, it creaked open. A long, mechanical arm swung the door wide and I glimpsed one of those monsters we were fighting. Well, using the term "fighting" sparingly. To be honest, it was a massacre. Immediately, the thing's demonic red eyes scanned the room. It made strange buzzing noises and walked to the next. I got up to folow it and again Cooper pulled me down. He pointed at the door. A new robot appeared with a sort of strange authority. This one looked different than the standard assualt (from what I could tell). It was dressed like a...general.
Chapter 2:
This bot walked through the floor without hesitation. I wanted to destroy the arrogant thing right there, but I knew if I discharged my weapon it would be all over. Everytime I looked up I was risking my life and my brother's. I ducked down for good and waited for a sign that the enemy had left. It took forever. I desperately wanted to know what was taking them so long to get lost. They already wiped us out (from what they could tell). What were they doing?
Finally, after hours I heard the team schuffle out of the AO and jump into hummers. I know it sounds weird for robots to use cars, but they moved a lot faster that way--and they knew how to drive well. Fortunately at the time for us, they traveled in packs like wolves.
"Okay, Karma. Time to move. We need to warn HQ about a possible attack on the homefront." Cooper stood up, his back popped. " Roger that, Crookshank. On your lead." I responded sharply. We weren't technically equals in the team, but he tended to go easier on me. I guess I was still his little sister.
Cooper cursed as he checked the surroundings, "They knew we were here! They set up trips! Those arrogant brain-less bats didn't even bother killing us themselves! I always hated robots." He did. He accidently destroyed the little play toy I got for my tenth birthday. That was, of course, ten years ago. Now the robots were destroying us. A lot can happen in a decade, not a lot changes though.
"Let's move out...carefully." Cooper distracted me from my thoughts. I followed him to the first tripwire blocking the door. I still don't understand how he got so good at spotting those devilish things. I was never good with...well technology of any type really. Besides my gun, of course.
Cautiously, he tip-toed over the delicate wire. We both safely avoided the first one. Then it got complicated. In the battle part of the building had been blown off. We could make the jump to the stairs easily, but this time a tripwire had been placed directly before the stairs. Somehow, we would have to make the jump over the hole and wire in one go. "Well," said Cooper, "This should be fun."
