Some Stuff About Mods

Let's face it, everyone likes mods. No matter if you're just starting Minecraft, or if you've been playing since the InDev days, you like mods. Even if you say you don't, we know you do. It's ok, really, mods provide new things for a game that can, admittedly, get very repetitious and boring after a while.

The real problem is: Which mods should you use, and should any be on a list of "must have" mods?

What is a mod, exactly?
The term "Mod" stands for "Modification", which is anything that changes Minecraft directly, in any way. Minimaps, new items and blocks, new sounds and/or visuals, and speeding up the game are all counted as mods because they change how Minecraft does something.

Sounds cool! But what did you mean about which we should use?
Well, I am a firm believer that everyone should have at least a few mods that they call "essential" to their Minecraft experiance. Thingsthat don't add blocks or other things, but mods like Minimaps and Optifine, to help assist you in ways that on;ly enhance the base game, not add any real new things to confuse the game.

Why should people have a list?
I'm not saying people should have an actual LIST, just some mods they really like and would like to use again and again. I know quite a few people who will wait for Optifine, REi's Minimap, and InvTweaks to update before they will count Minecraft as updated, and start to use the new version.

What do you recommend?
Whatever you like! To each their own, whatever you want or like to have in Minecraft is your own personal thing, and I won't ever tell you that you absolutely need it. I can recommend a few mods that a lot of people use and like, including me, but it's up to you to look around and find what you like. I'm not the person who's going to hold your hand with this, you silly reader!

Well, you said you'd recommend some and then didn't. Stupid blogger!
Good point. Here's the gamermanh-approved list of mods:

1. Optifine. Really speeds up the game and will allow you to customize just about all visual aspects.
2. Re's Minimap. This should really come with the game, in Zan's Round form. No more entity radar though!
3. InvTweaks, This helps a lot with organizing your inventory and chests. I can't live without it.

See? Only three on that list! And none of them add any blocks, only two actually add anything to the game! They're really more for helping people with certain things.

What about mods that add new things into the game?
I love them, and I almost always have a backed up copy of my minecraft.jar that has at least 4 mods that change core game mechanics. Things like the Magical Experiance mod, crossbows and Glowstone++. They add a lot to the game, but due to their lack of easy server functionality, a lot of mods can't really be fully enjoyed. Sadly, this most likely won't change for a while (I remember reading somewhere that Mojang planned to make server mods run like the server textures in 1.4, allowing the temporary downloading of them to a client, but that it got scraped), so most of those style mods will be left for the single player worlds.

Why did you type this in color and a totally new format this time?
I wanted to. Simple as that. I'll be honest, I don't like it as much as I thought I would, but I like typing in this shade of red, looks a little nicer. I'll probably use this format for other reasons as I blog, but not for things like this anymore.

So, that's what I have to say about mods. At least, that's what I have for now. I may do a deeper analysis of some of the mods I listed above, and do a bit more in-depth stuff with them, in my old format.

If you liked this, you know how to hit the diamond button up top! If you didn't, diamond me anyway so you can show other people how stupid I am!
