Back in the 50's it was not inknown for 'things' to have extraneous buttons just to make them look more 'advanced' Some things like stoves ❗ would have nonfunctional controls as a ruse to help sell them. At the time electronics were still discrete component and adds touting the number of transistors (the newest and bestest tech of the day) in radios etc were advertisd as containing some numer of them (even where some of theose were just soldered to unconnected circuits). In a few cases, the 'extra' transistors were actually the quality contriol rejects.
(Stripping components from junked electronics for one's own hobby builds was a thing back then…)
[Not all instances of dummy buttons are nefarious however as sometimes a manufacturor economizes by using the same panel for two or more models and the dummies are there to seal the holes on the lesser models. ]
