Since both of them don't seem to be here right now and aren't able to answer these questions, and I just happen to be here right now to (maybe) answer these questions, I'm going to do my very best to answer these questions.

So, basically, pets are little things that you can find while you're busy doing things anywhere on PMC, and they'll just wander about at the top of any pages you visit after you find one. If you have one, and someone visits your profile page, they'll be able to see your active pet instead of their own, if they have one. You can still see pets on other people's profile pages if you don't have any yourself, but you'll only see any pets on other people's profiles until you get your own. If you want to see some examples, you can visit my page, and also either vikpng's or Spongie's pages, but they both have the same pet so you'll only really need to visit one of their pages.

If you want to get your own pets, and you probably do because everyone seems to have at least one these days, the easiest way is probably either to keep refreshing the same page again and again until you see one at the top of the page (you might want to wait a bit between refreshes so you don't miss any pets) or to just keep going to the same two pages again and again until you see a pet (again, it helps to wait a bit before you load a new page so you don't miss one).

That was a bit long, and I've probably either given too much detail, or just explained it poorly because I'm bad at explaining things, but I do hope that answers your questions.
