At the base of Mount Fuji in Japan you can find Aokigahara forest, also known as The Sea of Trees. The forest is considered to be one of the darkest on the planet, and for good reason. The only light that gets in are stray beams from the sun. The forest is very dense as well, so it is very quiet. All that can be heard are the sounds of the creatures who live there. Of those creatures are the Darkwood Fairies. Not much is known about these fairies, but they are very crafty. They utilize the resources they have in the forest and create small houses in the trees. A hiker, we'll call him Kyle, sent in this photo a few months ago along with a short message:
"Upon trekking deep into the forest, I heard a quiet humming noise. I listened for a second and started to walk in it's direction. I saw a break in the trees ahead of me and approached it slowly. I peaked out from behind a tree and there she was. She was beautiful, but something was off about her. Feelings of regret and sorrow quickly overcame me. I pulled out my camera and took this picture before sneaking away. I camped in that forest for 3 weeks and I only saw her once and never again."
There have been reports of tiny huts at the top of the wider trees, but no one has been able to climb to the top. Some say when the sun is at a certain point in the sky, they see a mirage of tiny floating islands in the distance, but they disappeared upon further inspection. All of these people also reported the same feelings Kyle felt when they saw the huts or sky islands.
One report in particular really stuck out to me. A newly wed couple, Sam and Annie, were spending their honeymoon touring Japan. When they heard from locals about the forest dubbed The Sea of Trees, they knew it was going to be one of their stops. They were escorted from a nearby village to the outskirts of the forest. They had planned on locating one the Darkwood trees with a hut and camping out there for the night. They looked for 5 days, camping out on the forest floor at night. They were about to give up when they heard a quiet tinkling noise. They described it as sounding like a tiny bell. They followed the sound and stumbled upon an abandoned shack with a tree growing out of it. They were overjoyed but that changed as soon as they walked inside. They too felt feelings of great regret and sorrow, but they didn't want to turn back. There was a door just on the inside of the shack. Sam opened it but was knocked back by something. He described it as having a wrecking ball hit you with full force. Annie tried to go in but she too was knocked back. They couldn't pass the door, and the feelings of regret and sorrow grew to an extreme. They limped out of the shack and made their way out of the forest. Since that encounter, their marriage hasn't been the same. They say they still feel those negative feelings. Something about that night shattered that newly wed feeling. It's been constant fights and arguments since their honeymoon ended. They both, to this day, wish they would have never entered that shack.
The Process
I spent in total 5 days working on this. It started out as a simple flower garden with a big tree but I wanted to go bigger. I made the tree bigger than I had originally intended it to be and it was big enough for two small houses. I built them, trying out a new style as I went. Eventually I determined that the tree wasn't big enough so I made it a lot taller. I added a few more houses then placed all the leaves. I had some trouble with the border restrictions, but I worked them out. At the end I didn't know what else to add but I knew it was missing something. I love waterfalls and wanted to put one in, but I didn't know how. I ended up making a tiny floating island and had the water run off of that into a tiny pond below. I added stone, cobble, and clay to give the chunk more of a natural feel. I also messed around with terraforming so the whole thing wasn't too "square". The house at the bottom was sort of a last minute thing. I needed some way to make my story and the build correspond so I thought, "Why not add a lil hut on the ground."
Overall, I am proud of this build. I'm glad I took the time to participate in this contest because I showed myself that I am capable of building cool things that look decent. As for my lore, I'm no writer but I did my best. I went for a documentary/article feel.
