Hey guys! Welcome to yet another Spooky Scary Blog Month blog, filled with joy and terrors! Well, in a way, the terrors are more fun because of Halloween today (Yes, this was posted on Halloween of 2017. That wasn't even intentional at all, but more of a coincidence! xD). So, while everyone is outside trick-or-treating, I'm just sitting here alone... Typing away on a computer to bring you this blog. *sigh* It's moments like these that would make me want to travel back in time to the wonderful years of watching Cartoon Network without my brother calling me a "baby" for it... (Ugh, I want a house to get rid of that "insecurity".)

"But Eli!" I hear you yelling at your computer screen. "Why can't you just go hand out candy to the good old citizens? You're 17, and you're old enough to do that!" Sad truth being, I live in the middle of nowhere with my escort, Jasper Band (Ha, I was just kidding about living with Jasper! But I'm still in the middle of nowhere... RIP). Moaning about my past aside, I've got a special movie to review to you guys today. For those of you that are unlucky enough to be stuck in your home handing out candy or just came back from trick-or-treating, this blog can definitely hype you up with more Halloween spirit than usual until the Christmas commercials start to happen in November. Well, gee, what's up with that, marketing companies? Without further notice, let's get to reviewing this obscurity of a movie!

Before I go off on a tangent to review this movie, I'd like to tell you how I discovered this darn thing in the first place. On a boring afternoon, I decided to get onto YouTube and go watch some Nostalgia Critic. While flipping through his reviews, I found a strange little channel called Bobsheaux (Pronounced as "Bob-Show"). He often reviewed obscure little gems, and decided whether or not the movie should be put in his rendition of Pandora's Box or not. The first review I watched of his was Help! I'm A Fish!, but that's not we're going to look at today! We're going to look at one of the movies that he reviewed on a special time of his called "Bobsheauxween". Ha, try saying that ten times fast! The one that enthralled me the most was his review on Daddy, I'm a Zombie. I'm usually a fan of those "Oh no! I've turned into a *insert creature here*!" movies, because it's interesting to see how a character reacts to what he or she has transformed into after a strange blackout. For now, let's get into the summary of this sucker!

Daddy I'm a Zombie is a movie about an angsty teenage girl named Dixie, who's is looked after by her dad because her mom is too obsessed with plants (Ha! That's my technical school teacher's personality!). Her dad is a mortician and talks to dead bodies, making him look insane to Dixie. Forced to endure another day of school, Dixie is forced to drive with dad in a hearse to get there. Illogically, Dixie is a goth and hates driving in a hearse and complains that she doesn't want to be dropped off at school in a "death tank". Her best friend rejects her for no reason, and some stupid popular girls make fun her because she "wears black", even though she also wears some purple too. After school, Dixie is seen being angsty, but her dad insists on going to the fair with her.

After tons of begging, they go to the fair and meet up with the stupid popular girls. Dixie's dad let's her go out with the snooty girls, but uh oh! The blonds have lead her into an Admiral Ackbar sized trap! After seeing her friend kissing the boy of her dreams, Dixie runs off into the woods about to wait for something to kill her. Uh, that's... Kind of dark. What do you know, fate has her and she gets killed by a tree. She wakes up as a zombie, clearly doing no dream checks afterwards and tries to get out of the graveyard she was placed in. Some average-sized minotaurs chase after her, and she eventually meets Isis (Yeah, I'm not kidding. That's her real name! Don't worry. Bobsheaux makes a joke about this odd naming, and I'm not going to spoil it). After getting to know Isis, Dixie finds out that she has the Azoth, a strange resurrection device stored in her belt-buckle that her mom gave to her, and plenty hijinks ensue to meet Goner and get resurrected once more.

First off, let's talk about the concept itself. With all honesty, I'm a huge fan of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, and this story is kind of like the games in general. You've got the kid or teen who gets turned into a creature (You), meets up with a goofy comedic partner (Your Partner Pokemon), and they have a specific goal to achieve in the end (Save the world) while meeting another new friend as well (Grovyle) with a dark secret (If I mentioned his secret, it would be spoilers). The same goes for this adventure too. Dixie becomes a zombie, meets a goofy mummy named Isis, they have to revive Dixie while fighting Nebulosa at the same time, and they meet up with Goner who secretly is an antihero (not really spoilers because I'm not revealing why he's like that in the first place). It kept my interest most of the time and got really invested in the story. Although this plot is clichéd, at least it wasn't the unmentionable movie, so that's a plus.

Next, the characters. While watching this movie, I'm just thinking: "Why do these characters sound like Peridot (Shelby Rabara) with different accents, particularly Dixie?" With all honesty, I have no idea. I assumed it was a Filipino-made movie like The Nutshack, but I was wrong. Just recently, I checked it's nationality, and it turned out to be a Spanish-made movie, and not Filipino. Eh, it's alright. I have a Spanish friend, and although I admit my "race" is German, I could still do a decent Peridot impression off-camera, so I don't really mind. By the way, I don't mean to offend anyone. If I did, I'm sorry. I don't care about what race, gender, etc. you are, because you guys are all cool just the way you are. Wait, what was I doing again? Oh yeah, the characters. Although their dialogue is illogically written, I thought they weren't that bad. Dixie becomes happy in the end, and it's left justified because she was just too angsty in the beginning. Isis isn't really that bad either. She can be annoying to newcomers, but her back-story about marrying king Tut and how she was cursed was a plus. Goner is an okay antihero compared to most, but he seemed like more of the love interest grabber. Nebulosa is an okay villain, but her obsession with bonsai trees can be hilarious. Overall, these characters are okay, but can be annoying to first-time viewers or those who haven't heard Peridot's voice over and over to tolerate the high-pitched nerdiness of their voices.

Now that I've talked about the Peridot clones, let's talk about the animation. From the looks of it, this movie seems on par with the Spookley movie I did way back when. The CGI looks off, but at least the water doesn't look off. The intended style of this movie is based off of the Tim Burton movies, and boy does it show. Bleak colors are used for dreary moments, and half of the sets look like they're from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Heck, even one of the characters says the phrase "Far out beetlejuice", and I'm not going to reveal who it is because of spoilers. Although the backgrounds are highly Tim Burton stylized, the characters unfortunately lack in animation quality. The zombies in particular look like they are flopping around like fish puppets in the sun. Actually, every character has that quality, but it's very susceptible with the zombies. The character movements remind me more of Skylanders NPC characters or whenever I wave around my paper creations for fun like toys because of the intensive bobbing of their heads whenever they're talking. The animation is somewhat average, but at least it's not Foodfight.

Before I start rating this darn thing, let's talk about the final category, the humor. The jokes in Daddy, I'm a Zombie are okay, if you like puns. I'm not the biggest fan of pun-based humor, but if that's your cup of tea, this movie is for you. This is more of a story-based adventure, and just like Steven Universe, the humor is more subdued rather than intensified. They take time to let the characters breathe, and that's okay with me. There is a lot of visual humor, but that's mostly from the character designs (particularly from the minotaurs) and the weird animation. I did laugh for the cute moments, but that was really it.
Now that I've covered literally everything, it's finally time that I'd dig into the rating system! Well, what are we waiting for!? Let's get to it already!

Daddy, I'm a Zombie:

Story: 9/10. I can tolerate Poké
mon Mystery Dungeon based stories and clichés, but if that's not your cup of tea, you can take four points off of this rating.
Characters: 7.5/10. I like Peridot-sounding characters, and they seemed tolerable and angsty enough on their own. If you can look past the illogical dialogue, they are pretty good in comparison to most movies I've seen.
Animation: 6/10. I liked the Tim Burton style, but I just couldn't get over the character animation because they flop around like fish when talking.
Laughs: 3/10. The humor is subdued, but if you like puns, go ahead and add two points.
Fun: 8.5/10. I was actually quite invested when Dixie was in the zombie world. This is literally the closest we've got to an actual Pokémon Mystery Dungeon movie, and I'd give props for making me root for the goth girl character in the end!

Overall: 34/50. A mindless adventure for all!

This is actually becoming one of my favorite guilty pleasure movies to watch on Halloween. Like Hocus Pocus, it's becoming a guilty pleasure of mine, and the people who worked on this movie put their heart and soul into it. I can understand why it seemed low-grade, and that's because this looks like somebody's college project expanded into a movie. The title might not make sense, but if I were the teacher, I'd give this movie a B for at least putting effort into a project with a lousy script and title. The facts may seem wrong (Ghosts or Yokai have unfinished business, not zombies!), but if you're in for a mindless guilty pleasure of an adventure, this is the spook-fest for you! I'd like to wish you all a safe and happy Halloween, and stay tuned for my next blog in November and Spooky Scary Blog Month 2018! For now, have some Halloween memes. Peace! Muahahaha! *evil smile shows up on Peridot XJ9's (Eli) face*
