The rise and fall of the Thor

Once, there was a small, lush planet. Its atmosphere was fertile, suitable for carbon-based lifeforms. After some time, evolutionary and geothermal accidents resulted in the creation of a new species. Dumb at first, they evolved and became more intelligent. After they became sentient, they started to build up houses and settlements. The species began a natural development process. They began to create cities and industrial complexes, moving through the ages. They entered eras of prosperity and eras of depression. After all, the Thor recognized that they had doomed themselves. Courage and ideals were long lost. Every soul was corrupt and not a soul questioned their purpose for existence. After many ages, a new movement, called the Enlightened,  came into being. Steadily but surely, they gained popularity and arose from the ashes of the long corrupted empire.

The Enlightened stopped employing technology and began to explore their minds. Soon enough they discovered abilities which had slept in their species' minds for millennia. It was their time. Now that they discovered their true potential, the Enlightened became the most powerful institution on the planet, expanding until they had converted the whole Thor. With their new unity and powers, the Thor evolved into a utopian society. Learned in ethics and philosophy, they were a peaceful empire. It was during this period that they created mighty engines capable of bringing their civilisation to the stars.

Now, at their peak of cultural and biological evolution, the Thor started to send out so called "watchers". Watchers were groups of 50 Thor, sent to other planets populated with primitive species to observe them, taking precautions to ensure they did not disturb the natural pace of their evolution.  They were even able to create the illusion to look like the native population, so they would never be recognized.

So the Thor Empire was prospering, in a way no Thor had ever dreamed of. Due to their now peaceful nature, the Thor stopped building larger warships or any other weapon of war. They had not met any civilization that had evolved enough to travel space yet, so there was no need of any defence against possible alien threats.
The Thor soon started to believe that every space faring civilization evolved to their level on consciousness and looked forward to meeting similar races. They even invented a name for their eagerly awaited day of meeting, calling it the "day of participation".

The day of participation came, as a massive fleet appeared without any warning, right in front of the Thor Home world. The Thor were surprised, as most of the space vessels in this fleet were obviously built for war and not for simple space exploration. But most of the Thor expressed happiness in the species' telepathic network, a great firework of joy began to sparkle within the whole civilization.
Then the Thor sent a small fleet of unarmed vessels, filled with ambassadors and presents to the long awaited guests.

The Thor waited so long for this day. None of them doubted this would lead to a gigantic party of unity, a festival of fraternity.

So none of them were able to comprehend the situation. As the first shots span out from the alien cruiser which was closest to the small Thor fleet, destroying three Thor ships, many Thor souls lights went dark in the Thor telepathic network. The whole fleet started to fire and destroyed the whole Thor fleet, none of the ships survived.

Devastated by this events and still filled with terror, the Thor slowly began to understand that they were in real trouble. There were no defences, no means of defeating the fleet, nor means of deflecting the upcoming destruction. At first, most of the Thor still thought that all of this was a terrible misunderstanding, a giant mistake on both sides.

As the still silent, unknowable aliens started to approach the Thor homeworld, the last remaining vessels were launched, only able to evacuate a few thousand Thor.

Most of them, however, got destroyed by the enemy. Only a few of the ships were able to flee the heavily armed vessels and draft deep into space. While they fled, the Thor recognized that their telepathic network began to turn dark and darker. Too many Thor were dying to keep up the network, and it finally collapsed as the aliens began their planetary bombardment of the Thor homeworld.

Now, disconnected from the network, most of the remaining Thor felt into a deep coma. Only the strongest kept their consciousness, some of them even strong enough to maintain a small network,so that some of the weaker were able to connect and keep their mind clear.
But at this day, the day of participation, almost the whole Thor had been eradicated. One of the survivors, the one with the strongest and most expansive mind, received a vision from one of the alien vessels as his evac-shuttle flew in the direction of the Milky Way. The vision only contained one single thought, probably from one of the enemy individuals which had evolved enough to be able to submit telepathic messages without noticing it. The thought was: "We are Kyremia".

-----200 years later-----

The surviving Thor - about 500 souls - were able to maintain a new telepathic network. Thanks to this, they arrived in the Milky Way without any further casualties. Decimated, emotionally devastated and deeply depressed, the rest of the once glorious Council of Thor finally arrived in the milky way. Their goal was to find the last active watcher team, which was located on a small planet which the Thor called Gaia. The primitive natives called the planet themselves "Earth".They tried to contact the watchers as they approached the planet, but they didn't recieve any answer. So they decided to land at the last known coordinates transmitted by the Watchers.

All they found was a log, stored in one of the decrepit computers. The log told them anything they needed to know. A deadly virus killed most of the watchers, the last remaining decided to give up their mission and mix with the natives, to improve their genetic diversity. Due to their goal to mix up with the humans, the remaining watchers slowly disabled their mental abilities and vanished in different cultures, in different locations. None of the remaining Thor could possibly reach them now.

At this point, stranded on an unknown planet and with all remaining hope lost, the Thor decided to leave the planet again and try to start their civilisation from the beginning. They searched and explored space, until they found a suitable system to settle down again. They called their new home world "Walhalla". After many centuries of repopulating, the Thor reached a size of what you could call a race again. They began to re-establish their culture, but also with a new aspect. They would never be so naive to think that they would never need any weapons.

Never again.
