Only 14KB!
Stoo's Cliffier Cliffs is tiny. It's only comprised of 6 files in total, and only really modifies how terrain noise itself works. In other words, it's compatible with almost every other datapack and keeps the vanilla experience intact. Sea level is the same as before, biomes will work exactly the same way as they do in whichever version you're running, structures will spawn just as they usually would. The only thing that will change is how new terrain will generate.

Does it work with other datapacks or mods?

I wanted to make sure to modify the least amounts of files possible with this datapack. In this way, for the most part, Stoo's Cliffier Cliffs works fantastic alongside biome mods and datapacks.

Conflicts: So far, the only exceptions are William Wythers' Overhauled Overworld, Finesta's Better Vanilla and SkyDeckAGoGo's NeoBeta, but these are all by design as they each have their own noise settings.

Resolving the conflict: Do you still want to have both datapacks active at once? You can, it's just a few extra steps.

  1. Get the datapack file ready for the version of Cliffier Cliffs you want to install!
It's inside the .zip file you've downloaded from this page.

  2. Open the .zip files of both datapacks.
You should see a "pack.mcmeta" file and a "data" folder folder inside each.

  3. Drag and drop the "data" folder of Stoo's Cliffier Cliffs into the other pack's file.
If done correctly, you should get a message to either replace duplicate files. If you do, say "Yes to all".
If you're doing this step with WinRar, just say "Ok" to the prompt.

  4. Ta da! You can now enjoy Stoo's Cliffier Cliffs features alongside the other datapack.

How it works

This pack was highly inspired by the world render from this Minecraft trailer for 1.15. I've been meddling with terrain generation noise values for months to get to something like it until I finally got to this particular set! This is the best I've ever come up with.

The ah-ha moment happened when I decided to try smoothing down amplified terrain. The result is that terrain has several levels to it; you'll find valleys and hills, mountains and cliffs, all within regular biomes and all depending on the biome's own noise factor (deserts will be mellow, mountains will be tall and imposing, etc.). Having smoothed out amplified noise also (theoretically) reduces the amount of floating terrain you'd normally find in vanilla worlds.

Stoo's Cliffier Cliffs Minecraft Data PackSmall Tweaks to Desert Hills:
Desert Hills are tweaked to be more dune-like, rather than mountain-like, which make deserts feel too cliffy with the changes to terrain. In addition, just for fun, I've added the rare chance for beached shipwrecks to spawn buried under the sand. When Archeology features release, you can expect a few ruins to appear here, in the dunes.

Stoo's Cliffier Cliffs Minecraft Data PackSmall Tweaks to Rivers:
The new terrain generation has the unfortunate side effect of sometimes raising Rivers a bit too dramatically whenever they cut through tall terrain, making them generate without water. To fix this issue, two things were tweaked. First, Rivers will now generate deeper and wider than usual. Second, wherever there's a River that's still above land, it'll generate Valley features and vegetation, including Oak trees, Oak shrubs, grass and, rarely, vines. These features are very subtle additions, but help flesh out River biomes quite a bit! See the screenshots section for a few examples.

Optional Deeper Oceans Add-on

I've included a bonus pack to further improve on terrain generation, in this case by lowering the Ocean Floors. Secretly, they also tweak color values to make Oceans feel a bit less saturated, feel free to give feedback in the comments.

Installing
Placing the "stoos_cliffier_cliffs_v1.1b_extract_me.zip" file you've downloaded directly into the datapacks screen won't work! You'll have to first open the .zip file you've downloaded. Then, open the folder relating to the version of Minecraft you're running (either 1.16 or 1.17). Finally, you can drag and drop the files within that folder into your datapacks.

Please note that worldgen datapacks aren't currently supported by Realms. Make sure to backup your worlds.
Feel free to post pics of the new terrain in the comments down below!

v1.2c - New Add-On: Better Swamps! : by Suspicious Stoo 02/06/2021 4:49:28 pmFeb 6th, 2021

Here's another little update for this pack. Essentially, it tweaks rivers and adds an optional in-depth overhaul for Swamps and Swamp Hills!

Here's a few screenshots of what it looks like:

Feel free to update if you have the pack already installed, it should update new terrain accordingly! The Swamp add-on also adds vegetation and Hanging Roots to cave entrances, as well as wet caves, so I'm keeping it exclusive to 1.17.

That's all for now! Seeya soon.

It does not appear to work with Biomes o plenty. I could be mistaken, but biomes o plenty biomes do not seem to generate while the datapack is active. i suppose it uses custom noise as well. I dont know anything about this stuff. sorry for the lame comment lol

So i've noticed a problem when using this with mods-- the dunes biome from the atmospheric mod doesn't have the desert hills generation tweaks (for reference, the dunes biome is basically a desert with some different features). Is it possible to fix this by using a tag or something? I understand if mod compat isn't your priority at the moment though. Great worldgen btw!

Ah that's interesting, the mod probably uses its own noise gen specific to that biome! I think there's nothing I can do about it, unfortunately. I ought to make the pack compatible again with 1.17 first, but I'll take a look afterwards :-)

So far, my plan is to keep updating Survival Improvements with loot table tweaks or additions. For extra exploration elements, I'll be slowly rolling out a few add-ons or smaller datapacks (like Cliffier Cliffs, Darker Caves and eventually Better Swamps) containing new structures.

For just loot table changes, that can be done! What you can do is download Subtle Survival and delete everything in the "data" folder except the "minecraft/loot_tables" folder. Unless you're suggesting something else?
