While I do agree that better categories are needed, I'd like to suggest an alternative to
JohnGlacious suggestion:
Tags.
While Categories allow for broad categorization (and should definitely change on here), I don't think a lot of subcategories are the way to go, because a lot of maps can fall into multiple subcategories or genres. As such I'd like to propose a tag system, where the creator can select multiple (maybe max 5) tags that describe their map best. And then of course you should be able to search and filter these tags.
Tag ideas (not exhaustive): PvP, PvE, Boardgame, (remake of other) Game, CTM, Puzzle, Maze, Variety, RPG, Horror, Co-Op, Parkour, Educational, Seasonal, Maze, Unfair, Finding, Collection (of multiple games / stories / etc), Short, Long
Better Maps Sorting
If we look at Minecraft Realms categories they are very clearly defined. To go even further minecraftmaps.com has a good use of categories to find exactly what kind of map that you are looking for.
If I am looking for a map on PMC my only option is to chose the challenge/adventure tag. Every other tag relates to builds. A better system could be to first select if you want a build or map then further refine with the type of map/build you want.
Thanks for reading.
I might further refine my thoughts in the comments
