For Halloween, should I be Gru and get as many as my friends as possible to be minions?

Hello! I wanted to update y'all on how I'm doing since I've been super in and out online. I've been very busy with my personal life which has greatly helped me in my productivity outside of making art. However, I try my best to squeeze some time into working on my drawings! I wanted to ask you a quick poll on how I'm doing with my character designs alongside another question on how y'all are doing overall. I love chatting and hope I can make your guys' day!

For the artwork I'm referring to, I've recently updated a collection featuring my characters that I've been wanting to fix up for years now (yay)! Don't be shy to give your thoughts on them. I love all the supportive criticism I can get :D

How kind of you! Thank you! Was there anything in particular that you found most interesting about my style?

ZappyGru • 2026-10-04 05:53:59

Thank you for your input! I actually didn't think too much about the clothing in relation to the theme of my project (which is a fault on my part 😅). However, with how my notes have been recently, I may shoot for a more silly approach compared to typical noir-styled stories. I found it very interesting to have a somewhat realistic approach with more wacky stuff, and I think it would work out great for how my plans are turning out. Things can change if needed, but only time will tell!

ZappyGru • 2026-10-04 05:47:25

A fight between Richard and Hank sounds cool :0

Gru's facial expresions were loosely based off of cartoony images I pulled online which is something I'm very glad I went in that direction

BlueBoyBuilds Duuude these are siiick!! Shape language is a lost art these days, and you’re bringing it back!!! 💙💙💙💙
ZappyGru • 2026-10-04 05:45:35

I found it very appealing to focus shapes on my characters' designs, so I went, "why not work with that?" Eventually, I made something that I was very pleased to see :)

Let's gooo that's awesome!!

SevenScroll • 2026-10-04 01:05:04

I Second the shape language 🔥

My only very fine nitpick would be the clothing vs the story/world theme? They feel more like school/academic characters rather than recognizing immediately as detectives/from a mystery story, if that's what your going for.
*If* you wanted to go that way, I would recommend looking at film noir or detective character designs (Including side characters that make up the respective "Worlds"!), and try to see what gives them "the vibe" of the theme, and see if you can incorporate aspects of that into your characters.

But all that being said, recognition is based on association, and it is very easy to push too far and end up looking like every other character from that genre. The most important thing is to create what you enjoy, and think is truest to what you imagine.

The Scooby doo team has absolutely nothing to indicate ghosts or monster hunting via the characters, but are still as accepted and famous as they are.
There is no correct way to do art 👍

SnappNote • 2026-10-04 00:36:06

Richard looks like he has a sleeper build under that hood. I know Hank's the biggest dude but I bet Rich can beat him in arm wrestling.
I love Gru's evil expression, it reminds me of Calvin and Hobbes comics when Calvin has that mischievous grin.

I uploaded my old commissioned skin. I did this commission a long while ago, and thought to post it since I didn't have much else to do. It was also for 𝐅𝐥𝐚𝐧 (@Blan_Fi on twitter) and it was of a character called blighted ovum, from "The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth", what do you think?

Juillyoom quite lovely! I think you nailed the textures disgustingly right, feels like I'm at looking at real flesh!
Nitgo • 2026-10-03 05:38:58

Thank you, the commissioner had actually been wearing that skin for a year now. Back then skins didn't have the "no-download" option so I kept it off the website.

wild that the situation got so out of hand in the first place but this is great
still not happy about how the mods handled it, very unprofessional, and even the official response from the super mod was fluffed with corpo speak
but direct links to these resources are great
