Despite yesterday's encounter with a possessed scarecrow, Si and Storm have decided to give farming a try again after dinner. Little do they know that something horrible has been created the previous night... something that hungers for their souls.
Storm puts his plate in the sink. "Si, ready to farm again?" he asks. "Yup." Si says, getting up from his seat at the table and putting his plate away as well. "Hopefully nothing gets possessed and tries to kill us. We'll be back in an hour or two, IGE." "If you hear screams for help, come immediately." Storm tells his friend. "Cool." IGEBM responds. "I'll be in my room reading a book on the First Revolution. Good luck farming." He gets up and goes upstairs to read about the first revolution against the Council of Mods.
Si and Storm spend several hours on the farm, planting and harvesting corn, as well as tending to the other crops. As the moon rises and stars make themselves visible, however, an evil amidst the pumpkin patch makes itself visible. "Hey, Si, you see that green glow over there?" Storm asks, pointing to the patch in the corner of the farm, where there is an eerie green glow. "Yeah..." Si says, noticing it too. Suddenly, several pumpkins start to roll around, clearing the path for a carved jack-o-lantern with green-glowing eyes and a green-glowing mouth, along with four roots, which it is using to push itself along. "What in Palaeos' name is that?" Storm says. "No clue, but I don't like it." Si responds. A crow flies down to grab an ear of corn from the cart, but the jack-o-lantern grabs it and pulls it down, pulling a blue orb out of its body. After the orb is sucked into the pumpkin's mouth, the crow's body goes limp and drops dead on the ground. "Was that its soul?" Si asks, scared. The jack-o-lantern's roots thicken and extend, allowing the pumpkin to stand up. "It looks like an uproot from Mario Odyssey!"
The jack-o-lantern runs towards them, trying to consume their souls, and they run in the opposite direction. "IGE!" Storm shouts. "Help us!" "IGE!" Si shouts louder. More crows fly overhead, spotting the pile of corn in the cart, and the jack-o-lantern sucks their souls out as they near it. The four roots merge into two, tiny ones sprout on the inside of them, and four more come out of the sides like arms. Storm turns as he runs and throws his trowel at it, but the creature catches the tool in the air and tosses it aside. It then opens its mouth to spew toxic pumpkin guts, which fly up in an arc and barely miss Si and Storm. "IGE!" they shout in unison.
More crows fly overhead, attracted by the corn, the jack-o-lantern's glow, and the lack of a scarecrow, and it grabs four of them and consumes their souls. The creature's roots begin to merge in various ways, forming a body for it, clothed in black and gold robes. Its now-human-like arms end in claw-like roots, which it uses to catch more crows and consume their souls. At this moment, IGE teleports in, materializing next to the post where the scarecrow once hung. He looks around and figures out a plan. "Hey, Pumpkinhead, over here!" he says, drawings its attention. The creature turns to him and spews out more toxic pumpkin guts. IGE leaps back and dodges them, but they melt the wooden post he was standing by. Si and Storm stop running and come over to him. They hide in the cornfield and speak with each other. "Firstly, what do we call this guy?" Si asks. "Hmmm..." IGE says, thinking. "The Hell-o-Lantern!" "Now that that's settled, how do we kill it?" Storm asks. Before anyone can answer that question, a blob of pumpkin guts flies towards them.
After moving out of the way, the trio stand up and see that the Hell-o-Lantern has consumed more souls and transformed into its final form. Four thick roots have sprouted of its back to hold it in the air like spider legs, and two small roots are coming out of each of its middle claws, going into the ground and sprouting into smaller jack-o-lantern minions nearby. "Alright, here's the plan." IGE says. "I'll take out the little pumpkins. Storm, distract it. Si, while it's distracted, throw your shovel through its head." "I'm the distraction again?" Storm complains, half-serious and half-ready-to-kill-the-monster. "What is this, Scooby-Doo?"
They run out of the cornfield, with IGE firing light beams at the small jack-o-lanterns, which are spitting out small pellets of pumpkin guts. "Over here, knock-off Jack Skellington!" Storm shouts, waving his arms in the air to get the Hell-o-Lantern to look at him. His strategy works, and it begins to move towards him with its large "spider legs," breathing a stream of pumpkin guts in his direction. "Carp." Storm moves out of the way while Si runs - shovel in hand - around the back of the monster. "Here we go." he says, raising the shovel. "Mr. Hell-o-Lantern, by the power vested in me by Silabear, I hereby send you back to the pumpkin patch!" He throws the shovel at the back of the Hell-o-Lantern, and it impales it through the back of the head, causing its pumpkin head to explode and releasing the souls of the crows it killed, as well as a single red soul (an evil spirit) that stands out from the group, and which presumably brought the pumpkin to life in the first place. Its body falls apart and converts into a mess of roots that slowly decompose.
The group look at the pieces of the Hell-o-Lantern's head. "Yeah, I'm not coming back here." Si says. "Gravediggers clearly aren't meant to be farmers, no matter how much of the ground we both dig up." IGE and Storm laugh. "Wanna watch a movie?" IGE asks. "Sure, but nothing with pumpkins." Storm answers. They leave the farm (leaving the cart of corn behind) and walk back to the mansion in the rainy night.
TOMORROW - "A PEACEFUL EVENING!" (Wait, what? Is this the right series? Um... okay.)

More About the Hell-o-Lantern
I'm sure most of you reading this know what it is, but if you don't, allow me to explain. The Hell-o-Lantern was the first skin created by me for LogMaiden's palette contest, Houses of Halloween, last year. It remains one of my favorite skins, and I recently remade it for its 1-year birthday. Since I created IGEBM lore back in January, I've been wanting to incorporate it into it, and when I started planning out the stories for this series, I realized now was my chance. I'm so glad to have finally written a story featuring the Hell-o-Lantern in it, and I hope you guys like it too.
(Also, I think this is the most pop culture references I've ever put into an IGEBM lore story. Hah.)

A few weeks ago, I asked people if they'd be willing to make art of the Hell-o-Lantern to be featured on both this blog and the Mansion of Shivers OCs blog (linked in the character's name in the cast list).
